Why every couch you sit on was secretly built for a 5'10" man.

You know how you keep buying nicer sofas and you still can't get comfortable on any of them? It's not the sofa. It's the math.

Back in the 1950s the U.S. military hired a guy named Hertzberg to figure out the average soldier's body — depth, height, posture, everything. His data became the gold standard. It's literally what every sofa company on the planet still calibrates against today. A 5'10" man. That's the body type your couch was built around.

Seat depth, back angle, lumbar position — they all have to match YOUR proportions. Hertzberg's data shows that even a 1.5-inch mismatch in seat depth doubles micro-discomfort over thirty minutes. Your nervous system clocks the mismatch every minute you're sitting. You don't feel sharp pain. You feel restless. Vaguely off. Like the room is the problem.

Pay attention to the dimensions. Off-the-floor sofas hit the average. Made-to-order sofas (like ours) are designed for you.

Meet the NEW (vintage) Rasmusson Pot — hand-thrown vintage pottery, brand new in our vintage decor collection. The kind of piece I reach for when a console has the right wood but the wrong weight on top of it. (it's pic 2)

Why your hallway makes you tense the second you walk into it.

Ever notice how some hallways just make your shoulders tighten before you've even hit the next room? It's not in your head. It's in your amygdala.

Here's what's happening. In 2015 a team of architects and neuroscientists put people in an fMRI machine and showed them photos of compressed, low-ceilinged spaces. The amygdala — the part of your brain that watches for threats — lit up. Not metaphorically. Actually lit up. The same way it does when something jumps out at you in the dark.

Tight walls, low ceiling, no escape line. Your body runs the threat math before your conscious mind catches up. This is why hallways feel uneasy in beautiful homes. The design isn't the problem. The brain math is.

Soften it. A console with a lamp. A mirror that opens the line of sight. A piece of art that breaks the tunnel. Anything that signals: this is a place, not a chokepoint.

Compression is a stress signal, not just a layout.

The point of custom isn't picking your fabric. It's picking the tone the rest of your room is going to live inside.
