The biggest issue most of my clients have with pests is identification. 

You have to train your eye to not only see the pest itself but notice evidence of a pest early presence like plant damage. 

Awareness is the first step, so get out there and observe your garden very closely. With more practice, you’ll start seeing pests early and often.

Everyone has their Dolly story and I felt moved to share mine!

It isn't lost on me that this was my cousin's first dance
song at his wedding to another man. While I was suffering at that moment, I watched two young men who have experienced hate and oppression find love and light and joy and share it with the rest of us! It made me view my suffering differently at that time and offered me hope.

Life has a funny way of giving us second chances. This past January, Minneapolis yet again experienced continued violence and terrorism against our immigrant community as 🧊 agents kidnapped our neighbors from their homes. My PTSD symptoms returned with so much vigor I was afraid all that I had gained was lost in an instant. Somehow, I was not only able to not only overcome those symptoms but also I didn't need to shy away from helping my community.

Then in February 2026 Brandi Carlise performed in Minneapolis holding space for our pain. My husband and I tuned in live on the radio. This song came on, once again giving me hope, but this time it served as a reminder. It reminded me that I am strong, resilient and NEVER alone.

What pepper do you think I ate? The varieties of pepper I grew in this bed this year was: anaheim, jalapeño, aji dulce, chile de arbol, poblano, cayenne, and sweet lunchbox peppers. Let me know in the comments!

My husband often grows vegetables and varieties that we have little experience with. When harvesting these last fall, I was quite upset with him because we had so many fruits and I did not know what to do with them! I quickly learned how to add these to my diet and now they have become a garden staple for us. We love enjoying enchiladas and green chicken chili in the winter with salsa verde from our garden! I encourage you to do the same and try something new in your garden.

Are carrots in your fall garden plan? It can be difficult during hot dry days to maintain the moisture carrot seeds need to sprout.

That is why I recommend planting carrot seeds in between radish seeds - Not only will the radishes do the work of keeping the soil moist but you will also get an additional harvest.

Here is what you can do to STOP the damage squash vine borers cause in your garden. 

1. Rotate your crops. Wait 3 years before returning squash to the same bed. 
2. Choose resistant varieties like butternut squash and tromboncino. 
3. Create a physical barrier like a row cover, copper, or tin foil. 
4. Remove squash vine borers. 
5. Mitigate damage by keeping your plants healthy with nutrients and water.
