✨How do designers know what works and what doesn’t?✨

Someone recently asked me this, and my first answer was instinct. But the truth is that instinct has been developed through more than 20 years of studying, creating, and living around great design.

So I thought of a new series?

When I’m shopping for home decor and furnishings, I often see two items serving the same purpose—but one immediately feels like a stronger choice. Not because it’s more expensive, but because of factors like material, proportion, craftsmanship, longevity, and how it contributes to the overall feeling of a space.

Here, I break down those decisions and explain what I’m seeing through the lens of an interior designer.

Because good design isn’t about buying better things. It’s about making better decisions.
Would you have made the same choice? Tell me which one you would pick and why.

✨Modern Enchanted Cottage ✨
Construction is officially wrapped on this kitchen remodel and we’re already feeling the cozy-meets-collected vibes come to life. While the styling phase is still ahead (bring on the plants, layered shelves, cookbooks, ceramics, and personal touches ), the foundation of this space was designed with intention from the very beginning.

For this renovation, we leaned into an eclectic cottage aesthetic while keeping the overall feel fresh and elevated with modern finishes. Think mixed metals, curated “mismatched” details, soft sheen variations, organic shapes, and a backsplash selection that adds texture and character without overpowering the space. Every fixture and finish was chosen to create a kitchen that feels warm, lived-in, magical, and timeless — not overly polished or cookie-cutter.

The goal: a Modern Enchanted Cottage kitchen that feels collected over time, functional for everyday life, and full of personality. ✨

This family is so excited to finally move back into their renovated home, and we can’t wait to see the space fully styled and lived in. Are we on our way to achieving the vibe goals?

✨ There’s something about flea markets that instantly resets my creativity. ✨

As a designer, I’m always searching for pieces that bring warmth, character, and a collected feel to a home — not just what’s trending, but what feels timeless.

Today’s finds included everything from antique architectural details and vintage textiles to perfectly worn decor pieces with so much personality. These are the kinds of elements that make a space feel layered, elevated, and uniquely yours.

One of the biggest misconceptions about interior design is that beautiful homes come from buying everything new. In reality, the most interesting spaces mix old + new, polished + imperfect, acquired + personal.

Saving inspiration from trips like this is a huge part of my design process, and sourcing unique pieces for clients is honestly one of my favorite parts of the job.

Which piece would you have brought home?

POV: Rugs I would actually consider at HomeGoods as an interior designer.

When I’m sourcing rugs, I’m always looking beyond pattern alone. I’m paying attention to texture, tonal depth, material quality, and whether a piece feels layered and lived-in rather than flat or overly manufactured.

A few things I tend to gravitate toward:
— Natural materials
— Rich texture and variation
— Depth of color instead of overly saturated tones (unless it’s vintage or intentionally overly saturated)
— Pieces that feel elevated, timeless, and grounding within a space

The right rug doesn’t just fill a room — it changes how the entire space feels.
