INVASIVE PLANT: Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
Also known as Chinese or Stinking Sumac, this plant was introduced from China in 1784 as a specimen and shade tree. It was commonly found in nurseries by 1840 and has been popular in urban plantings ever since. This rapidly growing tree has now overwhelmed natural areas in over 30 states and is reported as invasive in both Arlington and Alexandria as well as in many national parks in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. It is now of special concern because it is so attractive to the invasive Spotted Lanternfly, an insect pest that threatens fruit and grape production and many forest trees.

Return at 4:00 p.m. to discover three NATIVE ALTERNATIVES.

Learn more about the problems posed by this invasive plant from a fact sheet and a short video prepared by Extension Master Gardeners:

Thank you all so much for braving the weather this morning and leading the way to a successful planting at Winter Island. Without all of you, the plants would still be in pots and not benefitting pollinators and controlling erosion at one of Salem's most popular outdoor spaces. Between 2023 and 2024, we've installed 374 native plants representing sixty-six species. With the addition of several tree species not previously growing on site, Winter Island Park should also now qualify as a level one arboretum. None of this was possible without all of you. I appreciate the time and the effort that everyone invested into making this planting project happen.
