Step 4: break up the near-concrete ground that the 2023 crop recently vacated and work in the light dressing of compost I'd spread on Saturday. Next step: planting 2025 crop year seedlings.

I have a name for the white Japanese iris, but not for the lavender number. Of the five or so ensatas I have, only two came to me labeled. The Hemerocallis is Strawberry Candy, a pretty reliable rebloomer.

An interesting tree, the pineapple guava (Acca sellowiana). Even here in the PacNW, the growing season isn't quite long enough for the fruit to fully ripen, tending to top out at about half the size of a small lemon before dropping off in November, and tasting like soap. I just treat it as a flowering tree--the flowers are pretty neat. The dark green leaves with the fuzzy silvery undersides are neat, as well.

And finally...the "saves" all dug, clipped and cleaned, and relocated under a grove of Douglas firs (and one-odd Norway spruce) to wait for me to line out the 2025 seedlings before potting them. Of 849 seedlings planted two springs ago, I've reduced the number to somewhere around 125.

Debris was cleaned, and compost was scattered over the bed. Nutritionally, the ground is great...but it's way heavy and more than just a little challenging to dig when things dry out. Tilling comes next.

No photo from yesterday showing digging progress, since I dug until I couldn't see. Digging will be finished this morning, so I am still on schedule.

One noteworthy tidbit is that the degree of intensity of purple based fans/foliage varies greatly in those varieties that have it. I pitched a host of PBF bearing seedlings because the flowers were unremarkable at best, utterly ghastly at worst, in spite of having PBF to some degree. The "keepers" express the trait on a spectrum of sorts, from barely noticeable all the way up to something like the seedling shown here, where the pigment shows almost a third of the way up the fan.

This is seedling TB 23-53K (Catch the Fever X Handsome Devil). It's an eye catcher, even out of bloom.
