Absolutely MASSIVE bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum)! Unfortunately, many moons ago, Farmer Dan did what he thought was right to help the tree by wrapping a cable around the trunks. Luckily, none of the failure directions are towards the home, due to the ice storm already having taken care of the north side, so the tree will be able to live out its life, although that life might be shorter than it could have been because of the girdling effect from the cable.

We have cared for this significant white oak for almost 30 years after a 4th of July canopy fire. The tree has slowly declined since that time and now has a conk growth at the base of the trunk; upon probing, we found a few hollow pockets up to 15 inches in depth. It is now time for this tree to go, as it poses a threat to pedestrians and passing vehicles. We consider 30 years of prolonged removal an immense success, although public safety comes first.

Southern exposure is arguably one of the most crucial factors in tree care that is not discussed enough. If a tree is over-thinned on the south side or a shading factor is removed, the reaction will potentially be sun scalding or the rapid development of epicormic sprouts within the canopy as an attempt to generate quick shade to protect its interior bark from sun scalding. Here is an example of southern shade loss due to a neighboring property being developed for a barn build years ago; the loss of timber for the build site caused effects to the trees on the north side. This can also happen from raising the canopy too high, and all species have different tolerances to southern exposure.

This is what you DONT want to see done to your hemlock. This tree was unfortunately gutted (lions tailed) this winter by someone, and as soon as our summer heat hits, I can almost guarantee a quick decline to death. Hemlocks here in the valley are fairly sensitive, especially one of this age with this amount of sun exposure. It is very unfortunate to see such poor practice of arbor culture on what was originally a beautiful Hemlock.
