Building an ADU is easier than ever with Oregon's statewide rules, and we know exactly how to navigate Salem's specific guidelines to ensure a smooth, 5-star experience from start to finish. In fact, the City of Salem even offers free ready-build plans for detached ADUs under 600 sq. ft. to help speed up the permit process!
Here’s what you need to know about building in Salem:
Size Limits: ADUs are generally limited to 900 sq. ft. or 75% of your main house size, whichever is less.
Parking: No off-street parking is required by the city for an ADU.
Rental Rules: ADUs cannot be used for short-term rentals (minimum 30-day lease required).
Permitting: As long as standards are met, no special land use application is required—just the necessary building permits.
