Let's talk work/school and home life balance. Its important to have a physical transition from being "home" to being at "work/school". As we have adapted to working and educating from home, our homes have had to adapt as well. My family is lucky enough to have an entire daylight basement where we have set up 2 offices and 2 school zones. My families are not so lucky and need help reimagining their homes multi purpose spaces. Here are my tips if you are looking for a good set up.
1) Keep areas of rest sacred. Setting up an office in your bedroom or any place you rest is a bad idea. This leads to overworking and drains your energy as your thoughts will be drawn to work by seeing the area while trying to rest. Its far better to set up a dual use area at the dining table that can easily be pushed aside or closed. Look for an area in an active area of your home.
2.) Make areas for work intentional. Think of walking to another room or even different floor as your commute. Your energy will transition between work to home life as you go between these spaces. All more better if you can have walls and a door.
3) Get creative with your options. How much do you really use that broom closet, pantry or hall storage or under stair area anyways? The older kid that works outside the house during the day is not using their bedroom during your working hours is free game. The under utilized garage space or basement can be transformed with some temporary walls. Or even a finished outbuilding or a trailor can give that extra work oasis you are needing.
4) Think out of the box for desk space. When your small spaces are pullung double duty its important that the space be tidy, compact or even stow away. There are easy ways to make fold up desks like murphy beds for work spaces.
5) Centralize school/work places. When you may be wearing two hats, its a good idea to have these spaces close so that you can be available but have enough space to focus.
