St Luke Heritage Gardens

St Luke Heritage Gardens This page, is dedicated to the restoration of ST Luke African American Methodist Episcopal AME Church in Salisbury, Missouri.

A 1860s church is buried under us, our sister church is in Glasgow Missouri and we sprung the 2nd baptist in Salisbury. Welcome to St Luke Heritage Gardens, we are a property consisted of St Luke AME church and its parsonage, both built in the Victorian era 1890s. St Luke sits ontop of a Union Church and the parsonage is built with the material left from Union Church. A Union church was a mix of r

eligions that worshiped under one roof, it was established on the estate of one of the first settlers name Sergeant Samual Williams which sat in Buffalo Lick Township around 1812. We are all that is left of his estate, better known as the slave quarters. We also spawned the Second Baptist church in Salisbury, and our Sister church was Campbell Chapel in Glasgow as well. Our project and our history take years to restore, but since 2016 we've been slowly building back what was once rotting away. I welcome you to follow along on our journal and to view our eBay store where we sell to fund the slow restoration work.

Welp, got one more door installed...

It opens, it closes and it locks...will work for me...

The parsonage is solid but it's all sorts of wonky from the century plus it's been here, the amount of rott and original unskilled builders...it is REALLY fun to get a door to work in here...

I might have to shave off a bit more of the bottom of the door after the floors are installed but I'm happy with it...

Tomorrow, I "think" I can finish up the baseboards and move onto shellac touch up and painting touch ups...

Fun thing about the doors...there is 16! Pieces of trim to each door and lord only knows how many finishing nails I had to hand bang n set in...

It's Berry Time!

I have Black Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Raspberries

I'm still on the fence on keeping the blackberries and black raspberries...The blackberries, OMG sucker everywhere in the garden and I just can't get a real good size on the black raspberries...my blueberry suffered, as i had to move it a few years ago...I plan to plant more if I ever get time to really work in the garden more..

The Fairy house, has now become the Raspberry house and I think I am happy with that :p

Well, I went out and ordered custom storm windows for the parsonage finally...

Every window is a different size and I've never ordered storm windows before plus being custom...no returns...so makes it nerve racking to order them..

They will mount on the casing trim and not recessed, so I know there shouldn't be much of an issue but hard to plunk the money down on something you just can't exchange for a different size...

They will be white and match the storm doors, I really wanted to go with period wood storms but the walls on the parsonage are just 2x4's and the window frames aren't wide enough for that style window...they will also come with black metal screens...means the hair balls can sit in the windows and not destroy the screens.

I also stopped and dug for some lumber. I'll need to build a new door casing for the parsonage and recreate some baseboards...so took awhile to dig for some one by's that didn't have a zillon knots...all the pine in the building have no knots but all the pine you get now is all "knotty pine"...

My peach tree is out of hand...

I grew it from a seed, what I just found out....is that when you grow a peach from seed, it grows like its on steroids...supposedly in like 5years it will reach 30ft and will live for decades...

If you buy a peach tree, it is grafted to a dwarf root stock and will not grow that large, slower growing and only live for about 10yrs...

I had no idea that was the case when I decided to save a seedling, and I have another one that sprouted...idk what to do with that one, I don't have room for another 30ft peach tree...

What the trim work looks like in natural light..I guess it's "orange" and everyone complains about orange woodwork but it's not so orange in person n it's as close as to what it looked like originally plus a century plus of wear..

First coat of shellac, slowly getting nice and shiny...

Also got back in the crawlspace and fixed a few bad areas in the original flooring...

Since I fixed that, think tomorrow I can get another door frame installed.

More paint stripping...from brown paint, to rustic pine...

Tomorrow I will get some shellac on this part and I will start to strip more baseboards...

This wall is original and only a bit of framing needed to be repaired, which I did from the exterior side in order to leave what I believe is an original bathroom...closets didn't really exist in the 1800s but you would need somewhere to have the ol chamber pot...there are two of these rooms in the parsonage and both the ceilings in them are covered in soot...you wouldn't need a lamp in a closet...

Still a bit to go on this room, need to piece together the baseboards, strip the rest of the baseboards, shellac everything, some floor repairs, reinstall another door/casing and then lay down the new flooring...

I can't save the original floors or 1920s? floors like I wanted too, which I wish I knew years ago because then I could have gotten the floor level...right now there is a good slope....they are chipped, cupped and old termite damage is showing...plus these are really "subfloors" as there is no other floor under them...
