A meadow does not become beautiful because every plant is the same. A woodland does not flourish because one species controls every inch of ground.

Stability comes from relationships complicated enough to hold the whole thing together.

Maybe humanity’s next great evolutionary step isn’t technological at all.

Maybe it is learning that we are neither masters of nature nor visitors to it.

We are participants.

And if we could genuinely understand that — across species, landscapes, cultures and borders — perhaps we would stop asking:

What can I take from this?

and start asking:

What relationship am I entering, and what responsibility comes with belonging here?

Whoever named this one must have watched them first. A group of goldfinches is called a charm — and five seconds of watching one bounce across a yard, dipping and calling on every dip, tells you exactly why.

Here's the part that makes August special: goldfinches are the latest nesters of any songbird in North America. While every other bird finished raising families back in June, goldfinches wait — on purpose — for right now, when thistledown is ready for nest lining and every coneflower and sunflower is going to seed. The busiest goldfinch month of the year is the one you're standing in.

So if a little gold-and-black acrobat is working your seedheads this week, he's not passing through. He's building a nursery.

Leave a few flowers standing. The charm knows what it's waiting for.

A little controlled chaos… and we wouldn’t have it any other way. 🐝

There are no straight lines here. No perfectly edged borders. Just flowers weaving through grasses, bees choosing their favourites, butterflies drifting from bloom to bloom… and one rather well-camouflaged cat quietly supervising it all. 🐈

This garden isn’t designed to impress from a distance—it’s designed to come alive up close.

Every seedhead, every swaying stem, every unexpected volunteer has a place. Nature has a way of creating beauty that’s impossible to plan.

Welcome to a garden where wildlife comes first… and we’re simply lucky enough to share it.

Nature doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it ripens quietly.

The black chokeberries at Seven House are beginning to colour, feeding birds, pollinators, and eventually us.

Their intensely flavoured berries may be a little too tart to eat straight from the branch, but they make exceptional jams, syrups, wines and juices packed with natural antioxidants.

Every native plant has a story. This is another chapter in the living landscape we’re restoring, one species at a time.

🍎🍐 The orchard is beginning to awaken…

One of the quiet joys of Seven House is that every tree tells its own story. Some apples are sweet enough to eat straight from the branch, others are sharp and perfect for cider, vinegar or preserves. The old pear trees, planted long before we arrived, are beginning to bow beneath their harvest once again.

As we wander beneath their branches, tasting, gathering and learning, we’re reminded that abundance doesn’t have to be rushed. It arrives in its own time.

From mid-August through September, we’d love to softly open our gates to a few friends who would enjoy sharing in the harvest. There’ll be no commercial pick-your-own—just simple days in the orchard, baskets in hand, good conversation, homemade lunches, and the pleasure of discovering old varieties that may have grown here for generations.

Whether you’d like to pick fruit for your own kitchen, learn how we make traditional apple cider vinegar, press juice, identify heritage varieties, or simply spend a peaceful day surrounded by nature, we’d be delighted to accommodate you.

The orchard has enough to feed people, birds, insects and wildlife alike. There is always plenty to share.

The orchard is whispering that autumn is on its way. 🍎🍐

Each morning, the colours deepen just a little more.

The apples are blushing red beneath decades-old branches. Pears hang heavy in the morning light. A lone raspberry offers a taste of summer, while a ladybird patrols a ripening cherry as if standing guard over the harvest.

What I love most isn’t simply the fruit.

It’s knowing these trees have stood here through generations—long before we arrived and, with a little care, long after we’re gone. Every apple carries the memory of seasons past. Every branch supports lichens, insects, birds and fungi. This orchard isn’t just producing food; it’s supporting an entire community of life.

As we continue restoring The Seven House, the orchard reminds us that restoration isn’t about making something new.

It’s about giving something old the chance to thrive again.

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t buying fresh produce.

It’s walking outside at sunrise and finding breakfast growing quietly beneath a canopy planted by hands you’ll never meet.

Native Plant Profile: Ballota nigra

Black horehound

Along the rough edges of lanes, hedgerows and old field boundaries, Ballota nigra quietly earns its place in the summer landscape. Its clusters of soft purple-pink flowers appear in whorls around the square stems, offering a steady supply of nectar to bees and other insects when many earlier wildflowers are beginning to fade.

A resilient European wild plant
Native across much of Europe—including Poland—black horehound thrives in disturbed, nutrient-rich ground along lanes, hedgerows, old buildings and field margins.

A member of the mint family, black horehound has softly hairy, deeply veined leaves and a strong, rather distinctive scent when bruised. That aroma may not win everyone over, but it helps deter grazing animals and has long contributed to the plant’s traditional use as a medicinal herb.

Why it matters

🐝 Pollinator support
Its long flowering season provides nectar for bumblebees, solitary bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects.

🌿 Hedgerow habitat
Dense stems offer shelter and resting places within the layered vegetation of banks, verges and unmanaged garden edges.

🌱 A resilient native-edge plant
Black horehound thrives in disturbed, nutrient-rich soils, often appearing around old buildings, tracks, gateways and woodland margins.

✂️ Stewardship rather than eradication
Where it is growing safely, allow part of the colony to flower fully. Cut back after flowering if you want to limit spreading, while leaving a few stems standing for insects and winter structure.

Not every valuable wild plant is delicate or conventionally beautiful. Some are sturdy, slightly unruly and perfectly adapted to the overlooked margins. Ballota nigra is one of those plants—a small but meaningful part of the living hedgerow community.

Observe it. Allow it to flower. Manage it thoughtfully.
