The primary use of cement board is as a backer for tile, brick and stone. It's much better than drywall because it's very strong, stiff and resistant to water. Since tile is generally used in wet areas it's important to use a backer material that isn't prone to mold and mildew growth.

Do bathroom fans matter?
Yes, in my experience and with out question you should have a fan. They are rated by CFM's. This means cubic foot per minute. That is the amount of air, per cubic foot, being exchanged every minute. This is important. Bathroom fans work hard to get moisture out. In my experience having a bathroom fan adds at least 10 years of life to your bathroom. I suggest them even if your bathroom has an openable window. So if your remodeling your bathroom add a fan and protect your investment.
