Simple wood frame detail that could save a lot of trouble in deck construction

Unlike a poured slab, a stone patio, or the ground beneath a deck, a deck itself does not need to be sloped. Prevent water from getting trapped between the house and the deck by leaving a gap between the first deck board and the flashing. Read more

Our recent design review brought us to the Wasatch Hollow House. Longtime residents of this Salt Lake City neighborhood, the active couple's main priorities were to create a home with more seamless indoor-outdoor living and room for their growing family. Once completed, the design will incorporate elements of the wife’s East Coast roots, like shade trellises on both the front and back of the house and a coastal color scheme, with the more traditional gable cottages commonly found in the area.

Unlike the client’s previous home, the new design includes a second story that captures stunning views across the valley to the Oquirrhs and Wasatch Range, complemented by a backyard overlooking Emigration Creek. With the kitchen as the heart of the home, the design reflects the client’s desire for a functional yet inviting space where dinner parties, backyard barbeques, and family gatherings can occur for generations to come.

Located on the corner of Sixth East and Sixth South across from Trolley Square, one of our first historic renovation projects was originally a Victorian cottage home built over a century ago for the Naylor family. Constructed in 1907 for William, a grocer, along with his wife Emily and their daughter Audrey, the home contained six rooms. The residence was occupied for nearly 80 years before being deemed uninhabitable. The building’s significant location in the Central City Historic District saved it from being demolished.

Fast forward to 2008 and our team took on the ambitious task of reinventing the building through careful preservation and adaptive reuse. Sixth and Sixth found a new purpose—our very own office building!

With an addition to the rear of the building, our team now occupies the second floor, sharing the building with Evergreene Construction.

Swipe to travel back in time and see before and after photos. The final three photos are of the Naylor family.

The most common question we get about Powder Mountain Cabin is about insulation.

The cabin uses a combination of triple-glazed windows and several inches of rigid insulation sandwiched between layers of weatherproofed, marine-grade ACX plywood walls to keep heat indoors.

But what exactly are triple-glazed windows?

They’re not your average windows– triple-glazed windows have three panes of glass for better energy efficiency and noise reduction.

Nestled at around 8,800 feet, this mountain getaway is the ideal retreat after a long day of skiing. Despite freezing temperatures outside, the cabin is cozy and warm on the coldest days.

Historic homes possess a unique charm that isn't easily replicated in contemporary construction. They bear witness to the past, offering glimpses into their respective eras' architectural trends, craftsmanship, and lifestyles. Renovating these homes is like stepping into the past, where every creaking floorboard and ornate molding tells a story.

In our Red Butte Home Case Study, we explain the difference between national and local historic districts and the implications of each, guide you through the availability of federal and state tax credits to help offset restoration and renovation costs, and illustrate how we helped one client navigate the complex regulations in a Salt Lake City Historic Preservation Overlay Zone to design a modern addition to their 1929 Tudor home located in the Yalecrest National Historic District.
