Come out on what's sure to be a frigid morning tomorrow to talk plants with us, grab some lovely fall fruits and veggies, and browse all the awesome crafts other vendors have!

Did you know we grow almost all our plants from seed?

Growing from seed ensures there's at least some genetic diversity among the individuals we're able to offer. Since many of our plants end up in restoration and landscape settings, it's important to conserve as much genetic diversity as possible of the original population from which the seed was collected. Most of the time, this means that when we're collecting seed in the field, we're taking few seeds from many plants in a population.

While the degree to which genetic diversity is important or even present in a population or species varies dramatically, seed reproduction allows for genetic recombination, or exchanging of genetic material between individuals, which inherently makes the seeds (and subsequently seedlings) produced more genetically diverse than clones. If we were to grow our plants from cuttings or tissue culture plantlets, we'd essentially be growing all the same exact individual!

Genetic diversity in plants begets their ability to respond to and adapt over time to their environment. More diversity usually means the population has a higher likelihood of persisting on the landscape because there's more of a chance that at least some individuals will be well-adapted to their environment as it changes over time and experiences different stressors.

Senna hebecarpa
Cuphea viscosissima
Capnoides sempervirens
Eryngium yuccifolium
Eupatorium rotundifolium
Opuntia cespitosa
Rudbeckia hirta

Did you know you can still plant perennials and trees in winter?

Planting dormant plants in the fall and winter is a great way to help them get established and acclimated in the soil before growing new shoots in the spring!

Visit our website to browse all available species and order trees and bare-root plants!
https://www.extrafloralbotanicals.com/

Herbaceous perennials survive the winter as roots, tubers, or corms, and pop up with all new foliage in the growing season. Trees and shrubs that lose their leaves in the winter benefit from fall and winter planting by using less water than in the growing season, allowing them to put more energy into their roots before making new leaves in the spring.

Give the gift of native plants to a loved one, a friend, or to the land you care for!

Pictured here are shining sumac (Rhus copallinum) and splitbeard bluestem (Andropogon ternarius).
