Now let’s check the main problem room — my daughter’s room.

The temperatures improved slightly from this → this → this, but it’s still not enough. The room simply isn’t getting enough supply airflow, so it will need airflow balancing.

The solution I came up with was to build a large supply trunk connected to both sides of the supply plenum. One side of the trunk will be about 8 feet long, while the other side will be about 4 feet long.

Both kids’ rooms originally had 5-inch ducts, which we upgraded to 6-inch ducts to increase airflow.

After the change, my daughter’s room went from 42 CFM to about 67 CFM, while my son’s room is getting around 68 CFM.

The flex ducts are the supply lines

The 18-inch duct is the main return

Two ducts run through wall chases to supply the downstairs

The remaining ducts supply the upstairs rooms

• Single-stage system: rooms reaching 77–78°F
• New equipment installed: temperatures stayed under ~74°F
• After ductwork upgrades: temperatures dropped to around 72°F

Compressing the scale helps align the temperature trends more clearly, making it easier to compare how the system is performing.

The airflow imbalance we’re seeing can be corrected fairly easily with manual dampers, which allow airflow to be redirected and balanced across the system.

Using a flow hood, I’m measuring the CFM at each vent to see how the ductwork changes affected airflow throughout the house.

The next day finally rolled around — game day.

Time to load up the truck, head out, lay down some drop cloths, and start tearing out the old ductwork.

Comparing the data from October 12th and February 26th reveals an interesting difference in system operation.

In October, the system begins cycling on and off around midnight, continuing those cycles until roughly midday, after runs for a longer period.

03/27/2026

The first test is in Comfort Mode, which limits the system to 350 CFM per ton. That works out to about 1400 CFM of total airflow.

Then I’ll run the test again in Max Cool, which allows the system to deliver 400 CFM per ton, or roughly 1600 CFM.

03/26/2026

The most noticeable improvement happened at the upstairs stairwell supply. The original 6-inch duct delivered about 112 CFM, but after replacing it with a 9-inch duct, the airflow increased to 248 CFM — more than double the previous airflow.
