There’s a pretty decent reason that us blue collar folks are having what seems like a moment right now on social media. For long while we’ve been relegated to the bottom rung in every capacity. Contractors are “the bad guy” in movies and shows and its just accepted as fact. Every construction worker is a potential sexual predator who has nothing better to do then cat call all day. After working 16 hrs and being literally covered in dirt, sweat, and blood I’ve had to deal with dirty looks or people stepping out of my way while I grocery shop. I worked construction while I was in college and one thing complete strangers used to love telling me was ”you’ll want to stick with college so you don’t end up doing this all your life”.
Fast forward and I am now partner to a construction firm that has the best rating for historical restoration in the city. My college degree is now more of an “interesting fact” and the rapid loss of folks in the trades coupled with the lack of new blood has put the average age of tradespeople at around 50. Suddenly everybody is looking for someone who knows what they are doing and we are finally (in my short lifetime anyway) being acknowledged.
So yea - after decades of being the assumptive lower class occupation we blue collars are getting a smidge of respect and we have worked our tails off for it. I think a little celebration is warranted. Sooner than later we’ll be back at the bottom but for now a little respect is nice.
