The First UU project - the lounge space before and after photos (same view). By reintroducing the mid-century modern palette, we transformed this existing dark, dated area into a bright and comfortable timeless space. The honesty of exposed white-painted structural members and maximizing glazing to allow nature into the interiors, both mid-century modern expressions, really sets the tone. We repurposed the existing hallway into additional lounge and kitchen space, which allowed us to work within the existing building footprint, resulting in a creative, cost effective solution. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Derrick Architects! We are so thankful to have the opportunity to work on projects of meaning, that require owner collaboration and a thoughtful approach. This photo of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, built in 1951, was studied for our First UU project. The mid-century modern architecture's use of exposed structural members that are painted white to provide a light feeling of honesty, and the generous use of glazing to allow nature to extend into the interiors were embrassed on our project. Before and after photos of this project to come. To all of the owners of our projects - Thank you!

In our next chapter of "Architecture of Meaning" we visit our Jubilee Outreach Church project. As a non-sectarian, evangelical church, the membership of Jubilee Outreach is composed of a gathering of different faiths and outlooks. The teaching of the Church is based on this variety. Therefore, the Church building is a composition of four differently shaped, pre-engineered metal buildings. Each metal building is shaped to be the most efficient for the rooms contained within it. These shapes are then composed into an interesting overall building mass.

Each of the metal buildings has a different color which refers to traditional symbols of sacred architecture. The education wing is blue, referring to sacred water. The sanctuary is beige, referring to sacred stone or the sacred mountain. The sanctuary lobby is green for the sacred forest. The main entrance lobby is white and is the building of light. Even the interiors continue this symbolism with the sanctuary, or sacred stone building has "blocks" of acoustic material stacked randomly to appear like the wailing wall in Jerusalem.

Meaningful symbolic design with efficent, common materials.

Our Alamo Feline Health Center renovation /addition project, one of only a few cat-only hospitals in the country! Dr. Gary Norsworthy, top cat veterinary in the country, engaged with Derrick Architects to design a new addition that includes new exam rooms, offices, and added client parking for their growing business. Careful design and planning presented solutions to meet the project's challenges of a zero lot line building, lack of functional flow, and inadequate parking on a limited site. The floor plan design addressed these challenges and also allowed the business to operate continuously throughout construction without compromising the final layout.

Derrick Architects' designed a creative solution for a zero lot line exterior wall on this office addition. The wall was erected 5' from the foundation edge, assembled and finished in 15' sections, then moved to it's final resting place on the edge of the slab. The panel joints were then finished on the exterior side by one construction worker and a ladder. Always thinking outside the box!

On our First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio project, we worked with the concrete finisher to produce leaf inlays that will have a fossil appearance once stained. This will be the new front porch entry to the Fellowship Hall renovated building! This will soften the concrete and create a more natural appearance. Principal Danny Derrick and Jared Williamson of Derrick Architect's both took a hands-on approach!
