This live oak was carrying about 80% more weight than it should have been. The culprit: ball moss.
Ball moss isn't a parasite, but when it takes over like this it chokes out light and airflow, adds serious load to the limbs, and kills off interior growth. Most oaks in San Antonio and the Hill Country are carrying way more of it than people realize.
We climbed it, stripped the ball moss, cleaned out the deadwood, and opened the canopy back up. Same tree, but now light and air move through it again and it can actually put energy into new growth instead of dead weight.
If your oaks look heavy, dark, or full of gray clumps, that's your sign.
