Handyman Tip of The Week - Don’t Get Electrocuted in Your Own Kitchen or Bathroom!

So it turns out that just after Benjamin Franklin figured out that electricity really is very useful and powerful, he also discovered it’s also really painful and can possibly kill you.

To protect you from being unalive, someone after Ben invented the GFI. A GFI is just a fancy name for a special kind of electrical outlet that has two buttons on it. If you go into your kitchen or bathroom and there’s an outlet within 6 feet of your sink, that outlet should have two buttons, one which says “Test” and the other says “Reset”.

What a GFI does is very simple. Let’s say you have a sink full of water. And let’s say you are making toast. ( I have no idea why you are in this situation, but stay with me.) Now, let’s say you accidentally drop the plugged in toaster into the water in your sink. That’s bad. Really, really bad. And I am not talking just because you now have soggy toast.

The electricity will quickly travel through the water and do a lot of damage to what is currently your healthy body.

But wait! There’s good news.

The GFI will detect this and immediately turn itself off so you don’t get electrocuted. Yea GFI!

Now two things you should know:

First, if you ever have outlets in your house that are suddenly not working, before you call us, check the GFI’s in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Sometimes GFI’s will turn off for reasons other than your soggy toast. When the GFI turns off, this will typically turn off other outlets as well. To fix the problem, press the reset button on the GFI. This should turn on the GFI and all other attached outlets as well. If that doesn’t work, call us because your problem is bigger.

Second, If you have an outlet within 6 feet of a water source you must have a GFI by code. If your bathroom or kitchen doesn’t have at least one, you are risking electrocution. They are relatively inexpensive to put in. Call us and we’ll put them in for you.

Handyman Tip Of The Week

What would you do if your faucet suddenly exploded or if your toilet wouldn't stop?

You would turn off the angle stop. The angle stop is a fancy name for the valve that turns off your water to a particular item. There's one behind your toilet and two under each of your bathroom sinks and your kitchen sink.

Angle stops should be able to quickly turn off your water in case of an emergency! But what if they are not?

Old fashioned angle stops are what we call 360 degree turns. That means to turn off the valve you have to turn it all the way around multiple times to get the water off. New angle stops are generally 1/4 turn angle stops. That means you merely turn it one quarter turn and the water goes off completely. Much easier in an emergency!

The other potential problem is a build up of calcium. We have really hard water in San Diego. Calcium deposits build up around your angle stops and make them really hard to turn off whether they are 360 turns or 1/4 turns. So about once a year, you should turn off, and then back on, every angle stop in your house just to make sure it easily turns off in case of an emergency.

If your angle stops are too hard to turn, or if you have 360 degree angle stops, when you know 1/4 turn ones would be much better, give us a call and we can replace them for you. Each one typically takes only 15-20 minutes and only costs about $12 each. It's one of those inexpensive investments that can give you peace of mind in the future.

You’re invited to Call Glenn Again’s anniversary celebration with OB Hardware!!

This month, Call Glenn Again Handyman and Home Services is celebrating 5 years in business and OB Hardware is celebrating 2 years with new owners Joe and Janae Kuchman!

During those 5 years, we have serviced 2900 clients and completed over 9000 jobs. We went from a one-person part time handyman service to a 13-person company that is now a California licensed remodeling contractor.

Please join us for a celebration from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, August 19 at OB Hardware at 4871 Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.

You’ll be able to see demonstrations, ask questions of our staff, win a variety of door prizes and have some great food and drink from the BBQ we’ll have running.
