Combination lock

A combination lock is a type of locking device in which a sequence of symbols, usually numbers, is used to open the lock. The sequence may be entered using a single rotating dial which interacts with several discs or cams, by using a set of several rotating discs with inscribed symbols which directly interact with the locking mechanism, or through an electronic or mechanical keypad.

Types range from inexpensive three-digit luggage locks to high-security safes. Unlike ordinary padlocks, combination locks do not use keys.

A handleset is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a lock that comes with a handle. These can get very fancy, and because they can get fancy, they are often used on front doors. If they are used on front doors they will almost always come with a deadbolt to provide extra security. Because these kinds of locks have multiple pieces (lots of metal) and are a bit more intricate, they can be as much as $100.

Bolt on locks

Bolt-on locks are locks that are fixed to the gate by being bolted on. They commonly require you to drill holes through the front profile of the gate through which they are installed with the supplied fixings. As shown below, they sit between the external frame of the gate and the internal bars.

Bolt-on locks are therefore mainly used on gates with a metal frame where a space can be created within the gate for the lock to be installed. If having a solid infill gate, you would need to cut a hole for the bolt-on lock to sit in which can make it more of a challenge to install the lock. Dimple Key

Dimple keys are less complicated types of keys that rely on dimples in the actual key to open a lock. The dimples, which are cone-shaped, that are located on the key itself will match with other dimples in the lock. When the dimples align properly, you will be able to easily open the lock. One thing that makes dimple keys easy to use is that there are two sets of dimples in the lock and the dimples located on the key are aligned in the same way on each side. This means that you don’t have to insert the key in a particular position in order to be able to unlock the lock.

Paracentric Key

Paracentric keys are only used to open and to lock paracentric locks. They are generally fairly easy to identify due to their strange shape and unusual design. Generally, paracentric keys will have very small teeth at the end of the key in addition to a contorted blade. While most people will never use or see a paracentric key in their life, they are very important and popular for use in prisons. Due to the shape of the key and the lock itself, it is very difficult to pick these locks, making them ideal for use when you do not want anyone to be able to open the lock without the key.

Many people like these locks because they can alert the user to times when the door opens, allowing them to monitor the comings and goings of their home.

Burglar Alarms

Unlike a surveillance camera system, security alarm systems are entirely autonomous. Like cameras, each sensor covers a specific zone, but are designed to detect unwanted intrusion and alert you to danger. Door and window sensors are common, as are glass break and motion detectors.
All of these have the ability to act immediately once triggered. Your monitoring service or the police can be alerted, and a local siren can sound to deter further damage to your property. You can also control when the alarm is armed or disarmed, and modern security alarms have intuitive, smartphone-compatible touchscreens that can be accessed wirelessly.

However, these alarm systems are not useful for tracking what happens after they are tripped. They can only log which perimeter zone was breached when; sensors are incapable of providing the details a good CCTV system offers.
