AIA26 brought the architecture community to our home turf, and San Diego delivered.

Our founder, Margit Whitlock, spent the conference as a local volunteer, which turned out to be the best seat in the house. There is something clarifying about showing your city to thousands of architects from around the world. From giving directions, to pointing people toward the best pizza, to watching them fall for San Diego the way we did years ago, it was a week of playing concierge to the whole industry.

It was also a reminder of why we do this work. The seminars and tours set a high bar, the exhibit hall stayed packed every day, and the conversations kept circling back to where design is headed. There was real energy around AI and technology, and just as much excitement about the materials starting to shape what we build next.

We came away proud to be architects and energized by a room full of creative, forward-thinking people. Thank you to AIA San Diego and the AIA26 team for an event that did our city justice.

If you were there, what stood out most to you?

Golden Road Brewery

We turned a dead parking lot into a place people don't want to leave.

Golden Road came to ACI with a vision: open-air brewpubs that brew on site and feel like a block party. The first one had to set the tone for everything that followed.

So we got resourceful. Shipping containers became the architecture itself, kitchen, brew house, all of it, wrapped in bold graphics you can spot from down the street. Signature trees and market lights shade the tables. Citrus trees were planted on purpose, to pair fresh fruit with fresh beer. Add fire pits, repurposed kegs as herb planters, and a few rounds of Giant Jenga, and you've got a destination. Kid- and dog-friendly, all are welcome.

Getting building officials comfortable with container shell structures? That was the hard part. The community's response made every bit of it worth it.

Got a project that needs creative problem-solving? Let's talk.

A vibrant oasis where relaxation meets color and energy. Scalloped coral, fluted wood, terrazzo, and a fire bowl that takes this poolside from lounging by day to gathering at night.
Sophisticated, playful, and built for the way you actually want to spend a day outside.

A vacation should feel like an event from the moment you walk in.

That was the brief for Sunset Ridge, a purpose-built vacation ownership resort in Las Vegas. The lobby makes the first promise: a 25-foot fireplace flanked by laser-cut metal art panels, custom chandeliers cascading 15 feet of light overhead. Nobody walks past that quietly.

Beyond it, a clubhouse built for togetherness, full-service dining, lounge, bar, game room, arcade, gym, and theater. Even the residences rethink the ritual: a high social bar replaces the traditional table, so the kitchen becomes the gathering place it always wanted to be.

ACI served as design consultant under Nine Ten Design Group. Contemporary elegance, designed to be felt.

The best seat in a hotel isn't always a room.

At Virgin Hotel San Francisco, a 1,600-square-foot rooftop restaurant and bar hands guests the whole skyline. Down at street level, roughly 4,265 square feet of restaurant, bar, and retail, including the brand's flagship space, keeps the energy at the curb, not behind a lobby desk.

It's a deliberate rhythm: a building that gives something back to the city at the bottom, and rewards you with a view at the top. Hospitality, top to bottom.

Designing a hotel that earns its place on the block? Let's talk.

Huntington Beach Center

Some buildings don't need to be replaced. They need to be seen differently.

This signature 1980s shopping center had good bones buried under a dated Spanish tile mansard roof. The fix isn't demolition, it's reinvention. Out goes the tile. In comes a crisp new metal roof and a corner tower feature wrapped in 3Form translucent lit panels that glow after dark.

One bold gesture, and a center that time forgot becomes a corner the community notices again.

That's the quiet power of a smart exterior refresh.

Tommy Bahama Restaurant Renovation

A remodel can change everything without changing the address.

This 11,200-square-foot project reimagined an existing restaurant inside and out. The interior got a smarter layout and a completely renovated bar. The dining patio was rebuilt from the ground up into a distinctive outdoor experience, the kind of space guests ask to be seated in.

Proof that a thoughtful renovation can transform how a place performs, no demolition required.

Thinking about repositioning an existing restaurant? Let's talk about how we can help.

A brand walks in the door before a single guest does.

In San Francisco's Financial District, this 12-story, 196-room hotel had to feel like Virgin from the sidewalk up, and the architecture does the talking. A facade of glass, finished metal, stone, and plaster. Cantilevered ceilings and vertical detailing that give the building a real sense of lift. A translucent glass canopy reaching out over Fourth and Clementina Streets, turning a street corner into an entrance.

Step inside and the ground-floor ceilings rise, and a 78,000-square-foot building suddenly feels like a welcome.

Brand-aligned architecture isn't about a logo. It's about making a building feel inevitable.
