A reclaimed wood countertop. A raw wood accent. Cement tile from counter to hood. This Solana Beach kitchen was designed around texture, and every surface earns its place.

For most of human history, the hearth was where the house began. Not decoratively. Literally. The room was oriented toward it, the family gathered around it, and the architecture was built to give it weight.

I've always believed that logic still applies in a kitchen. The range wall is the modern hearth. This one in Solana Beach makes that unmistakably clear. The raw beam over the hood reads like a mantle. The plaster surround gives it permanence. Nothing in this kitchen competes with it because nothing needs to.

A few weeks ago, we unveiled our new Plato Woodwork, Inc. display at the Studio Stratton Inc. showroom, and it was worth the wait.

The craftsmanship Plato brings to every piece is the reason I've specified their cabinetry for decades. Seeing it at full scale is a completely different experience than a sample board. The quality reads differently when you're standing in front of it.

One detail worth looking for when you visit: the built-in mug ledge tucked right under the upper cabinets. Functional storage that doubles as a display for the pieces you actually love using every day.

Plato is one of the few cabinetry lines I've specified consistently for over 30 years because the quality holds up long after install day.

The warmest thing in this transitional farmhouse kitchen isn't the oven.

The range hood sets the tone for the entire range wall. The greige subway tile backsplash keeps the background soft without competing. The Calacatta marble countertop runs edge to edge, grounding it all.

In a kitchen this calm, one warm material in the right place changes everything around it.

Summer plans look a lot different when your outdoor space looks like this.

This outdoor space was designed to be the most used room in the home from May through October, and it shows. Stone columns, warm wood cabinetry, a beverage fridge within arm's reach of the seating. Nothing was left to afterthought.

A 1925 Craftsman home in Mission Hills. A wish list that looked impossible on paper.

This family knew what they wanted: a kitchen that actually worked, two sinks in the main bath, and a walk-in closet.
Thirty years of designing spaces like this teaches you that "impossible" usually just means the space hasn't been understood yet. Once we understood this one, everything they asked for had a home.

No corner goes to waste.

This La Costa kitchen was designed around the home's Spanish roots. Warm terracotta floors, that arched detail on the wall, and custom cabinetry that fits every inch of the space.

That tucked-away nook? Now a fully built-out coffee station with marble countertop, wine storage, and cabinetry designed to belong there.
