September is the perfect window to refresh your property after the summer rush AND get ready for the holiday rush that quickly follows.

Here is something most landscapers won’t say: the rock is the cheap part 🚚 (in most cases)

Here are other factors that drive up the cost of a landscaping project.

Rock is heavy, and heavy things cost money to move.
Freight comes down to how far it rode to reach you, which means two rocks that look nearly identical in a photo can price completely differently based on which pit they came out of.

So ask where the material is coming from. It tells you more than asking the price does.

Four questions that make them comparable:

Source. Where is the material coming from? Freight is most of the cost.
Depth. How deep is it spread, in writing?
Access. Can the truck actually reach the work?
Disposal. How are dump fees handled?

With every bid or estimate we submit, we are transparent about these numbers as they big cost drivers.

Love dark rock? Let's talk about where you are putting it 🖤

Charcoal and black rock looks incredible. Against light stucco it is a genuine knockout. We get the appeal.

But dark rock soaks up heat, holds onto it, and hands it back for hours after the sun goes down. Your parking lot is doing it right now.

Think twice: west-facing walls, around the AC unit, under windows, packed against plants you like. Go for it: north-facing, shade, accents and borders, anywhere away from the building.

It is not the rock. It is the spot that matters more.

1. Bury a third of it. Sometimes half.
2. Run the grain horizontal. That is how sediment settled.
3. Odd numbers, uneven spacing. Three, not four.
4. Vary the sizes. Matching boulders read as inventory.

Ever look at a boulder and think "something's off here" but you cannot figure out exactly what it is? 🪨

It’s the placement.

In nature, a boulder is mostly underground. What you see is the part that surfaced. Your eye knows this without ever being taught it, so when one sits fully exposed on flat ground, it reads as exactly what it is: a very heavy object that arrived on a truck.

The fix costs nothing. Bury a third of it. Same rock, same afternoon, completely different property.

Somebody had to say it 🎃

Red lava rock had a moment. That moment was 2005.

We are not judging. Okay, a little. We are mostly just noting that a solid share of our removal calls are lava rock, and the people making them all sound slightly embarrassed.

If you are ready to retire that red lava rock, we know a guy. 😉

We spend most of the week around rock, and at some point you start noticing they have personalities ☕

🟤 Palm Springs Gold is a honey oat latte. Universally liked. Nobody has ever been mad about Palm Springs Gold.
🟤 Salt & Pepper is cold brew with a splash of cream. No theatrics, no explaining itself.
🟤 Mexican Beach Pebble is a straight espresso. Expensive, and fully aware of it. Decomposed.
🟤 Granite is a flat white. Goes with everything, ends up tracked into the lobby.
🟤 Red Lava Rock is a pumpkin spice. Everybody did it in 2005 🎃
