Are the details overwhelming?

You’ve come to the right place!

We can all grow at least a little bit of food regardless of our space. We can start small or we can start big. We just need to start and go from there.

It’s true that there is so much to consider when taking on a project like this. This is why I coach busy new gardeners, how to design and set up a kitchen garden in their backyard and how to start growing. I help them fast track the process.

Join me this year and I will show you on how to set up your garden and how to get growing.

🦠Dirty gardening tools can spread disease from infected soil or plant. Properly cleaning and disinfecting tools can reduce the spread of plant and soil diseases.

❓How often to sterilize?

Before and after use if you notice signs of infection in soil or plants. Definitely wipe down your shears between tomato plants if you are pruning them and same goes for trees.

Before putting them away for the winter and before using them in the spring.

You should thoroughly clean and disinfect your tools at the end of the year.

❓How to sterilize?

Cleaning: Remove dirt, sap, and debris with a stiff brush, soapy sponge, or strong jet of water.

Disinfecting: Soak your tools in a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water for at least 10 minutes.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol to wipe or dip your tools. (That’s what I do, I use the 91% solution to wipe down my tools)

Do you want a garden?

It’s a lot of work upfront but so very worth it once it’s installed right. I really wanted this garden so I had to make it happen.

Want details on how to design and build a raised bed garden like this? Let me know below! ⬇️👇⬇️

👉👉👉My Raised Bed Garden: This was a lengthy project for me since we were DIY’ing it. From planning, measuring, design to installation even wheelbarrows full of soil. It took me a looooong long time because a large project like this is very labour intensive. It’s good to have a team install a raised bed garden like this quickly and saving you time and effort so you can get planting faster.

👉👉A project like this needs a garden designer to guide you to pick the optimal spot in your garden, measure it all out, do a design rendering for you so you can be clear on what it will look like after installation, bring in a team to prepare the ground, haul and cut the wood, build the raised beds and install them, seal the wood, reinforce the raised beds, bring in gravel, install the trellises and bring in the soil and install the irrigation. 💪💪💪

Do you want a raised bed garden too?

Tips for starting 👇

Start small. This weekend go grab a half barrel or some grow bags and fill it with soil, compost and worm castings.

You can start with something low maintenance like potatoes. In 70-80 days you’ll have fresh home grown potatoes.

Here are my easy go to crops you can start growing this weekend:

A lettuce container
Potato half barrel or grow bag
Herb container
Swiss chard and kale (also will do well in a container)

Next I would grab my growing guide to you can chart your temperatures and know exactly what you can grow in your zip code any time of the year. You will have a clear view of what you can plant month by month in your microclimate.

Do this to find out what you can grow this month in your zip code. 👇

Google “high and low temperatures for (enter your city name or zip code)”. You’ll get the average high and low for each month. Jot this down on a piece of paper.

Then google “gardening season temperatures” and categorize each month’s highs and lows into the garden season it belongs in.

Now google which plants thrive in that season. Boom, you’re making a garden calendar for your zip code.

I actually made a worksheet and chart to help you do this.

Follow me, then comment “guide” and I’ll send it to you so you can make a planting calendar easy-peasy.

It’s time to get those veggies in the ground.

Whatever climate you are in cold or mild, we’re transitioning our gardens.

I’m curious, where are you located and when will you be planting your garden?

I’m located in Southern California so because my climate is mild I will be transitioning my garden to warm season veggies now.

Follow me, then comment “warm” and I’ll send you my warm season cheat sheet.

Can you grow in the city?

Yes. Yes you can. You will need the right setup and optimal sun for what you want to grow and you’ll need to get the timing right.

But even if you have a shady spot you can grow a lot of edibles even with 4 hours of sun.

It’s all about optimizing your space. And every space has some unique quirks or challenges.

We can find solutions to that. We just shouldn’t give up just because it didn’t work out the first time.

That’s why I’m building a community of new gardeners to join me in my Kitchen Garden Club so we can uplift each other and help each other grow while learning the foundations of gardening.

Follow me, then comment “club” if you would like me to send you the link to sign up so you too can grow a productive garden.
