The monasteries of Meteora are some of the most striking sights in Greece. It is no coincidence that this place got its name. From Greek it literally means "floating in the air," which perfectly describes these six incredible Greek Orthodox monasteries.
They are all located on top of cliffs that rise 400 meters above the Thessaly Valley, near the town of Kalambaka in Greece.
To visit all six monasteries in one day, we recommend starting with the monasteries of St. Nicholas, Barlaam and the Great Meteors before lunchtime (from 1 p.m.), when the monasteries are closed to visitors. Then go to St. Rusana, St. Trinity Monastery, and St. Stephanie in the afternoon.
Magical, mystical, impressive, unusual, breathtaking, immense, inspiring are just a few of the words tourists often use when trying to describe the area. All of these monasteries are protected by UNESCO.
