These last few months have been defined by reflection on both the work and the people that have defined LD:

Founded in material exploration, intuitive response, and refining ideas through making.

Guided by craft, curiosity, and collaboration.

The work of Lundberg Design continues.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Lundberg Design founder Olle Lundberg passed away suddenly on October 31, 2025. Lundberg Design has been active in San Francisco since 1987. In 1996, Olle moved his growing practice to the Dogpatch neighborhood, renovating a mattress factory on 3rd Street to accommodate the firm’s integrated architecture practice and fabrication shop which have flourished for over 35 years.

For his wife Mary Breuer and his devoted team, countless colleagues, clients and collaborators and virtually anyone who met him, Olle was larger than life. He had a unique take on the profession of architecture, and the ability to describe important ideas about the significance of design at any scale in a compelling way, influencing many practitioners and clients. His legacy of craft and material-focused architectural design work has made an indelible imprint on the practice of architecture which will be carried on by his firm.

His self-made journey was underscored by a spirit of invention and a relentless obsession with fabrication and craft. To those who knew him, Olle was a force. He was endlessly curious, creative, kind, passionate, and an incredible friend. His influence reaches far beyond our studio walls, and his spirit will continue to guide the work we do every day.

His first book, An Architecture of Craft, was recently released by Princeton Architectural Press/Chronicle Books. At the time of his death, Olle was preparing for a series of book talks and events. Details will follow soon regarding those planned events and we thank you for your patience in the meantime.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Redwood Coast Humane Society at redwoodcoasthumane.org in Olle’s memory.

After decades of designing, building, and exploring materials as an Architectural Design firm, Lundberg Design is thrilled to announce that our first book An Architecture of Craft will be available on October 28th! See our website or link in bio to pre-order your copy through or Amazon.
AN ARCHITECTURE OF CRAFT
An exploration of the work and principles of San Francisco architecture studio Lundberg Design. Forward by Andy Goldsworthy, edited by Dung Ngo, with project photography by Yoshihiro Makino.

Lundberg Design is an award-winning architectural firm based in the Dogpatch neighborhood in San Francisco. Founded by Olle Lundberg in 1987, the studio focuses on the notion of craft—the unique piece or project handmade for just that client—and the use of recycled materials and objects. With so much of the world mediated by screens and automation, LD believes that craft emphasizes tactility, durability, and sustainability. It brings back human connection in the digital age and roots us all in community and place. This illuminating book traces Lundberg's personal and architectural journey, from his experience as a young University of Virginia student to becoming the go-to architect for the Bay Area's digital elite, in addition to the studio’s obsession with materials and how they push them to their limits.

An Architecture of Craft offers inspiration and insight for creatives, students, and design enthusiasts who are passionate about environmentally, socially responsible, deeply personal design.

Sneak peek into the process behind our current site-specific labor of love: An etched stainless steel table for Vice Versa Wines new wine cave. At an impressive 16 feet long with a seamless stainless steel top, executing an etching project on this scale was no small feat for our fabrication studio. We began by hand-applying a resist texture to the stainless steel sheet. We then etched the exposed areas using ferric chloride, carefully monitoring the process until we achieved the desired depth and detail. The etching was then neutralized with baking soda to ensure a flawless finish. The stainless steel is laminated to Richlite, providing a sturdy substrate for the tabletop, a secure foundation for the leg attachment armature, and a refined transition detail.

While the table is still in progress, we’re excited to showcase it in its new home soon. This piece is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that went into its creation.

With the redesign of Autodesk’s Gallery, we curated a palette of subtle yet rich, highly tactile architectural materials that create a calm backdrop, inviting a second glance and a gentle touch. Simultaneously timeless in their simplicity and an embodiment of a sustainable future, they include back-lit panels made of fused recycled glass, acoustic ceiling baffles made from recycled PET bottles, felt walls made from un-dyed sheep’s wool, wall panels and hidden doors clad in super-matte metallic nanocomposites, door and cabinet surrounds made from recycled paper panels with sustainably harvested bamboo cores, and hand-made concrete tiles and terrazzo countertops in a subtle variety of textures. We are proud to say that the project achieved LEED Platinum certification. For a residence we recently completed on the stunning Monterey Peninsula, our shop fabricated some heroic signature items, including this ten-foot-tall front door crafted from reclaimed teak, bronze, and pewter. Pewter was used to fill in the heavily weathered exterior voids in the teak boards and will continue to patina in the coastal environment. The best chefs are always reinterpreting, reimagining, and embracing the experimental in their cuisine. We design restaurants in much the same way. Like the chefs we collaborate with, our work is shaped by our diverse backgrounds and experiences, weaving together unique influences that enrich our creative vision. The ultimate goal is to surprise and delight, by making the dining experience one that appeals to all the senses. www.lundbergdesign.com

For a recently completed ground-up residence in Pebble Beach, our shop created some truly remarkable custom pieces, including these enormous walnut room dividers that each stand 12 feet tall. These screens were crafted from two pairs of book-matched Claro Walnut slabs sourced from a single enormous tree affectionately known as Uncle Bert, which was unfortunately done in by a drought. We trimmed the slabs minimally to celebrate their natural form.

Book-matching reveals the natural symmetry and intricate grain patterns of the wood, turning each divider into functional art. The rich, deep hues and unique grain patterns of the Claro Walnut bring warmth and sophistication to the space, while the slab's sheer scale creates a dramatic architectural statement. Each piece serves not just as a partition, but as a focal point in the home's interior design, blending timeless craftsmanship with natural beauty, a hallmark of our practice.

Beauty lies in the unexpected. We love breathing new life into discarded and salvaged objects, transforming them into architectural focal points. These two massive light fixtures—one that hangs over the bar and billiard room at our studio, and one that once hung at HardWater whiskey bar in San Francisco—are each made from an old, abandoned steel buoy.
