GROW design+build

GROW design+build GROW design+build works at the intersection of architecture and landscape.

Our work strives to bridge the gap between interior and exterior, bringing landscape inside and living space outside. We specialize in containerized mobile landscapes, vertical gardens, landscape structures and hardscape elements. We work with concrete, steel, wood and plant material, and strive to incorporate salvaged material in all our designs. In short we make cool stuff:
custom designed furni

ture in reclaimed wood, steel or cast concrete...
greenhouses, compost systems and chicken coops...
recycled rain gutter gardens, living wall panels, and trellises...
cast concrete pavers, patios and decks...
organic farms and gardens, native plant landscapes, and event spaces...
dry creeks, french drains, ponds and water elements...

We recently had the opportunity to design+build a landscape, more of an outdoor living space in the Eureka Valley neighborhood in San Francisco. This project was for a couple with two young children, they wanted a space for their parents, who visited constantly, to sit and watch their kids play. The site is steeply sloped above and below, the wall behind the property drops 20, meaning everything we did had to be tied into the hillside and promote the movement of water. Like all our work, every edge is imaged as a place to sit, for either a 6' or 2' tall human...

A couple of years ago we completed a large project in East Oakland off of Park St, steeply sloped huge yard, they just had a bady, so the plan was to create a giant climbing gym for someone learning to walk. We used reclaimed materials throughout, some 17' beams from a high school gym in Turlock, old growth redwood from a 100 year old water tank in the Santa Cruz mountains, 500 lb used granite street curbs from the streets of san francisco...

Another San Francisco project recently completed, show what you can do with a tiny space. This was a concrete slab courtyard a month ago, of course the retaining element are made of wood from a local salvage yard, the landscape uses less than one shower a week worth of water...

We have been working on this project for a year and it is (finally) nearly complete. Most of the wood elements are made from salvaged material: Japanese railroad ties, a Santa Cruz mountains water tank, salvaged Douglas Fir timbers. The client wanted a space she could have parties in, almost all the built elements double as benches...
