This project is our remodel of and addition to a 1951 William Wurster-designed courtyard bungalow. Wurster offset the house from the street, creating a peaceful courtyard in the middle of the City. One façade on the courtyard was a beautiful window wall into the Living Room. The other wall, the kitchen wall, had an open air utility closet and one window. In need of a modernization, we gutted the kitchen, expanded it to replace the outdoor closet, and gave it the “love” the other courtyard façade had. Now with a full window wall and a porous relationship to the garden (and the rest of the house), it feels like a natural completion of the courtyard. Thank you to these wonderful clients, my talented team, and to for turning the project down. Thank you also to and for sharing the story.
