WRNS Studio

WRNS Studio Identity-rich, site-specific design at any scale. We are redefining what it means to be comfortable, healthy and productive at home, work, and school.

With offices in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Honolulu, our staff of 180+ works in creative shed-like studios across typologies: core and shell, interiors, education, civic, residential, and urban mixed-use. Recognized for identity-rich, site-specific design at any scale, we bring to each new project a point of view informed by all the other work in which we engage, resulting in fresh idea

s that push us (and our clients) to imagine whatโ€™s possible. Today's most transformative organizations โ€” Stanford, UCSF, Airbnb, Adobe, Dolby, Intuit, and Microsoft, to name a few โ€” have entrusted us with stewarding their brands in what has arguably become the world's center of innovation. Working with these game-changing entrepreneurs and research institutions has allowed us to push our own curiosities and export this distinct spirit of innovation to a national clientele. We think a lot about public /private interface, and how it might be enriched. Problem solvers and tech nerds at heart, we tinker in models, garages, even under the hood of our design software. When we talk about sustainability, we come from a net positive ideal that supports the bottom line. All of this work is bracketed by a vigorous culture of education within the studio, linking academia with practice to advance architectural excellence.

Set on a 71-acre property along Hawaiโ€˜iโ€™s Kona coffee belt, ๐—ž๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ ๐—™๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ transforms a working agricultural landscape into a tasting room, distillery lab, and gathering place rooted in the craft of making. Designed by WRNS Studio, the project immerses visitors in the process of distilling and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The project began with a copper still stored in a shipping container on the property before design began. From that starting point, the brief was simple: create a destination where new spirits could be developed using local ingredientsโ€”coffee cherries, pineapple, ti plants, and native botanicalsโ€”while inviting visitors into the process.

Visitors arrive along an orchard-lined drive before the tasting room emerges through coconut trees, opening to sweeping views of the Pacific. A deep roof overhang shades the building while supporting rooftop photovoltaics, helping reduce energy use by more than 50%.

Inside, the copper still sits at the heart of the spaceโ€”making the act of distilling part of the experience. Rainwater collection and reuse of process water reduce potable water demand by roughly 30%, helping irrigate the surrounding gardens and orchards.

A working farm, a distillery, and a gathering place rooted in Hawaiโ€˜iโ€™s land and culture.

Mass timber is gaining momentum in California as new building codes, prefabrication, and emerging supply chains make taller wood buildings possible.

At WRNS, we are seeing this firsthand. Our work on ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ ๐—ฉ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ, the Cabrillo College / UC Santa Cruz Student Housing project, uses a hybrid mass timber structural system for 624 student beds. The approach shows how creative timber design can accelerate delivery while reducing embodied carbon.

Scaling these solutions will also require new manufacturing capacity. WRNS is working with Scott Ehlert and the FABRIC Mass Timber team to help launch Californiaโ€™s first mass timber manufacturing facility, connecting forest health, local industry, and lower carbon construction.

On March 24, Ben Mickus, Partner at WRNS Studio, will join leaders from SPUR, oWow, and FABRIC Mass Timber for a conversation on how mass timber manufacturing and prefabrication are reshaping housing delivery in California.

Join the online conversation.

Bringing internal medicine, behavioral health, and specialty services together under one roof, the project represents a major investment by the Colusa Indian Community Council in the town of Colusa. The design leverages the long-span bow trusses of the existing grocery store to create a flexible clinical environment while extending the life of a familiar Main Street landmark.

An open garden with a water feature built of local granite replaces the old grocery stock room, marking a welcoming entrance for patients and bringing nature into the daily care environment. Through adaptive reuse instead of new ground-up construction, the project achieves a 20% reduction in construction cost and a 60% reduction in embodied carbonโ€”pairing community health with long-term environmental stewardship.

The LEED Platinum Mashouf Wellness Center at San Francisco State University integrates athletics, recreation, and well-being into the everyday rhythms of campus. Designed as both a gateway and a gathering place, the facility brings aquatics, fitness, court sports, and social spaces together in a highly visible, flexible environmentโ€”supported by integrated mechanical and water systems that enable high-performance use.

Delivered from early vision through construction, the project reflects a holistic approach to student successโ€”supporting physical, mental, and social well-being while remaining adaptable to evolving campus needs. As conversations around higher-ed recreation and wellness continue to advance, Mashouf remains a strong reference point for integrated, inclusive campus design.

We recently celebrated Frist Health Center at Princeton University receiving a 2025 Preservation Honor Award from AIA New Jersey.

The historic building, Eno Hall (1924), is positioned at the center of the main atrium, which is organized into three distinct wings. Together, they form the heart and connective tissue of the project, allowing the existing structure to anchor and orient the new health center.

Through pathways and portals, the design moves from reuse toward celebration, linking old and new while reinforcing continuity across the campus and supporting Princeton Universityโ€™s Health Services program.

Congratulations to the team.

Steel is rising at the College of the Desert Palm Springs Development, bringing into focus a new campus designed as a place to connect and discover.

Sculptural steel โ€œtrees,โ€ inspired by the regionโ€™s palm trees and windmills, branch outward to support long-span roofs and shaded outdoor circulation, shaping a climate-responsive framework for learning in the desert. The project reimagines education as a vibrant marketplace, combining learning, making, and gathering spaces that support multiple career pathways and community engagement.

As construction progresses, the intent becomes clear: flexible, visible, and welcoming spaces that extend learning beyond the classroom and into the landscape, creating new places that open doors to higher education and support the Collegeโ€™s vision of tuition-free access for students across the Coachella Valley.

Grateful to be collaborating with an exceptional team bringing this vision to life.

Envisioned by the Gonzales Youth Council eight years ago, this weekend the City of Gonzales, California and Monterey County Free Libraries opened the doors of the Dennis & Janice Caprara Community Center Complexโ€”a place shaped by community voice and belief in the power of public space. Located alongside local schools, the Center brings together a Teen Innovation Center, multipurpose classrooms, a library, and outdoor spaces for performance, gathering, and play.

As Jeffrey Alvarez, founding Gonzales Youth Commissioner, shared at the opening:

โ€œWhat began as an idea โ€” youth having a voice โ€” has now become a permanent space that will shape generations to come. It represents trust, vision, and the belief that young people belong not just in the future, but in the present.โ€

Guided by bilingual engagement, youth leadership, and deep local and state partnership, equity here is not an aspirationโ€”itโ€™s embedded in process and outcome. What stands today is more than a building: itโ€™s a long-term investment in connection, lifelong learning, and future generations in Gonzales.

Congratulations to an incredible team.
