RIP Margareta.

Her best-selling book on the subject encouraged the world to tidy up homes and lives as death approached — as a gift for loved ones and to revisit memories.

A year-end public service announcement to save those inclined to wait until the last minute from future grief and expenses:

If you mailing time-sensitive items, please consider setting an intention starting in 2026 to ensure that you avoid penalties, late fees, and uncounted votes.

"A USPS postmark used to indicate the date when mail was dropped in a mailbox or submitted at the post office counter. Now, USPS is clarifying in a new rule that the postmark will reflect the date an envelope is first processed by an automated USPS sorting machine, potentially days after it was dropped off – not the actual drop-off date." (link to article in first comment)

Also, where there used to be three or four mailboxes outside one of the nearby post offices, now there is one. Are mailboxes going to be going the way of checkbook registers? I swear, the bank people look at me like I'm from Mars when I ask for one.

One very consistent aspect to my work weeks is no two are ever the same. I took more pictures than usual last week, hence this post to share a bit of the week in the life of a professional organizer.

Monday:
(Photo 1) After moving a 97-year-old gentleman in San Francisco last Thursday, I returned to his new abode on Monday morning to layout and oversee hanging of his artwork.

(Photo 2) After lunch, I drove to Marin where a client and I finished triaging her kitchen cabinets and drawers. This little guy (and his sister) oversaw the work. Here he is demonstrating the collective vibe at the end of the long day.

Tuesday:
(Photo 3) I worked from home, BUT I attended a photo event and got to chat photography afterwards with the one and only

Wednesday:
(Photo 4) The day started with early morning pickups from two long-time clients. Their combined six boxes of papers and two boxes of electronics were deposited in Berkeley for shredding.

(Photo 5) I hopped back on the freeway and headed to Oakland where the clients’ dog featured heavily into our organizing session. You may recall seeing her here before. She is a highlight whenever I work with them.

Thursday:
(Photo 6) I delivered client donations to and medical equipment to ReCares. After lunch, I walked to my weekly afternoon client in the Castro.

Friday:
(Photo 7) After being logged out of the system for a week or two, I got back in so I can continue work on a private art collection.

I've heard this story from many clients over the years. It rings all too true.

ADHD is highly genetic, with about 74% of diagnoses linked to genetic causes — often running in families.

When the client said, “you look so cute sitting there,” I asked if she wanted to take my photo. Despite being visually impaired and completely unfamiliar with the technology of a smartphone, she said yes. As she held my phone up to her face, I pointed out the large white dot (a.k.a. the shutter button) on the screen and returned to the chair across from her.

This was my favorite image from the lot.

For the past 16 years, Cole Hardware has been an incredible and collaborative partner and promoter of me and many other independent home service providers. I am so appreciative of this above the fold feature in their email this weekend.

As a long-time customer and regular reader of their printed newsletter, I first learned about and followed their journey of becoming one of the first businesses to be certified by the San Francisco Green Business Program. They get credit for being the catalyst for my own pursuit of certification and ultimately following the calling to do the work that I do the way that I do it.

That oh so satisfying feeling from consolidating all the shoe and sneaker inserts and accessories a client had been storing inadvertently in at least nine shoeboxes. Once the unneeded boxes were eliminated from the closet (and recycled), there was an abundance of open space. Ta da!

Yup, I did it again, and am sharing a better late than never happy dance!

During the initial walkthrough of a two-bedroom apartment that needed to be cleaned out, the clients identified the furniture they were keeping and what needed to be given away.

Among the make it go away items were a desk and companion wardrobe/locker in the office that were said to be from the Disney offices. I took a look inside both, snapped a few photos, and did a wee bit of research at home. I shared a link with the clients and suggested they may want to make an inquiry before donating them.

Long story short: the secretary’s desk was the first of its kind seen by the auction house and both pieces sold with ease.

Did you know organizing with and for adults with ADHD has evolved to become one of the specialties in my practice? It's been an unexpected journey, and here's how it happened.

Without knowing it at the time, I was working with clients who had ADHD since the earliest days of my organizing practice. They may not have known it either. No one mentioned the acronym. In calls and emails, I routinely heard about the desire for help due to varying degrees of overwhelm, piles, clu...
