Design is a problem solving exercise. On this sloping hillside, the best view is towards the west. How do you manage solar heat gain when the sun goes down in the west, because overhangs can only do a portion of the job of shading the windows. Although these overhangs are nice and deep, in this project we added exterior roll shades that shade the afternoon sun and heat while still being transparent enough to experience the view.

For this East Bay kitchen, we worked with the existing cottage framework but reconfigured nearly everything about how the space received and distributed daylight.

On a site with constant groundwater, we replaced a failing foundation with a robust system built to perform like a boat, then layered bold roof geometry and precise material shifts to give this compact three-bedroom home both presence and privacy opposite a public path.

Spatial generosity rarely shows up in wet rooms, but by lifting the ceiling geometry and introducing a clerestory bar, we turned a utilitarian bathroom into something with real presence!

Strategic wall removals opened this space into a single flowing space, where the kitchen now functions as freestanding furniture within the primary living volume. Redesigning a home while taking into account the stability of the existing structure takes more time than you'd think! We pride ourselves on staying on budget though.

By removing structural walls and recessing the ceiling perimeter, we created a double-height space where natural light becomes the defining material. Opening up a building, especially in a remodel, also reveals its bones and gives us the opportunity to address comfort at the core. Better insulation, fewer drafts, and a true sense of warmth and coziness. Over time, these thoughtful interventions translate into lower energy use and a home that performs as beautifully as it feels.

We're onsite consistently during framing to confirm that load paths are correct, that shear walls land where specified, and that the spatial strategy we designed survives the translation from line drawing to lumber and concrete.

This home is all about how it plays with natural light throughout the day, and it's magnificent even before completion.
