Unions are alive and well in San Francisco, and one recently asked MH/A to help reimagine their offices in a new location South of Market. The move into an industrial building in the Middle-Market neighborhood was not without hiccups. Zoning changes, seismic
upgrades and deficient base building services and utilities were a few of the hurdles to be jumped over. The end result of a clean and
modern two-story connected headquarters office space was well worth the effort and persistence.

A classic post-war apartment in San Francisco's Pacific Heights... Small rooms, smaller windows, and little advantage taken of either the views or the light. The strategy was to have a series of objects inhabit and animate the apartment. A new entry hall organizes the floor plan and acts as a hinge between public and private. A fireplace hearth, surround, and wall act as a visual anchor at the center of the public space, around which the living room, dining area, and kitchen rotate. And, a new organic dining table, supported by branch-like legs at one end and a rigid beam at the other, provides a needed programmatic element in an unimposing manner.

Fahr LLC occupies the entire 10th floor of an historic San Francisco high-rise with an idiosyncratic and charming concrete frame and high double-hung wood windows. The large, u-shaped space was structured in a way to provide a lasting order that would be crisp, open, and flexible over time, allowing for maximum air circulation and natural light. All conference spaces are visually transparent, and are located along the north wall to minimize the need for localized mechanical systems for acoustically enclosed spaces. Programming and spatial order was achieved through a series of parallel, east-west bands, alternating with open circulation and programmed spaces.
