450 Architects

450 Architects 450 Architects, a design studio founded on principles of sustainable thinking.

David Bushnell and Richard Parker met while studying for their Bachelor of Architecture degrees at Cornell University, and they have remained close friends ever since. Their post-college career of collaboration was born out of a shared vision that architecture can make the world a better place. They committed to an architecture practice of integrity, one that combined honest materials with harmoni

ous modern design, honoring the roots of each site to create warm, inviting spaces. It is within this balanced philosophy that their ecologically intelligent architecture firm was born. Since its inception, 450 Architects has defied limits, forging an innovative practice of ecologically mindful architecture. Before the term “sustainability” became mainstream, 450 Architects promoted the benefits of earth-preserving practices through advocacy and action. While invested in creating the best possible environments, as architects we are not interested in imposing merely our own perspective onto our projects. Rather, we
work with our clients with an ethos of partnership and equanimity to help bring the best possible version of the client’s own vision to fruition.

450 Architects’ approach is collaborative and hands-on, balancing conceptual innovation with thoughtful craftsmanship to shape soulful spaces and structures. Our expertise translates perfectly to a diverse variety of assignments, both large and small scale: residential, commercial, renewable, educational, and open and public space. While we have a passionate interest in creating beautiful private dwellings,we are particularly driven toward civic work, a deeply engaged consideration of how a building can impact a wider public and accommodate people in a nourishing, uplifting, and lasting way.

Máyyan ‘Ooyákma (translating to Coyote Ridge) was named by the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe indigenous to this California region. These 1,859 acres of grasslands, protected by our clients at the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, connects Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range providing an important channel for wildlife migration.

As part of a larger team, 450 Architects was honored to present 7.5 miles worth of new trails with rest areas and custom shaded overlooks to enjoy the rich biodiversity of these rare grasslands. It was the team’s shared goal to pay homage to this land’s indigenous history and, in collaboration with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and others, we produced informational signage sharing the tribe’s culture and traditional language throughout the preserve.

This a fun news segment about the opening of and touches on the history of this space as San Francisco's First reservoir. The park is still functioning as a reservoir with a 500,000 storm water capture system under the main lawn the reduces the parks reliance on city water. For more info on the history of the reservoir and the new water systems check out the Interpretive Signage throughout the park!

After being fenced off for 80 years, the site of the former Francisco Reservoir on San Francisco's Russian Hill is now open to the public as the city's newest park.
