Clement Nursery

Clement Nursery San Francisco's oldest nursery, housed in the historic buildings of 1904 dairy farm. The greenhouse is once again, a greenhouse. I'm Phillip. It's 80th.

Housed in some of the Richmond district's oldest structures, the 1904 dairy farm barn and stables and cottage have been restored. But three months into our venture, discoveries are still being made every day, like a watering tank for cattle, hidden under 73 year old plywood flooring. I've brought old farm back to life. With respect, with awe, and with whimsy. And I have the privilege of taking Cle

ment Nursery into the next decade. Get ready to be inspired, to learn, and to grow with me. Welcome back to Clement Nursery. Founded in 1941. Reopening soon.

After an Agave bloomed in my home garden last year, a seed must have fallen into this pinecone from a tree towering above.

I discovered this seedling while gardening this morning, perfectly content with everything life has dealt it so far.

Where there’s a will there’s a way.

Happy Birthday to the four latest offspring of our resident, and extremely prolific pair of Dark-Eyed Junco.

These impossibly small chicks hatched this morning, and on day one, it’s all about the tufts of fuzz on their tiny heads.

Junco are ground nesters, but here at the nursery, they always find a suitable place in one of our landscape nursery pots.

When we read this week that the Golden Gate Bridge opened May 27, 1937, we realized that Clement Nursery opened its doors in the same year!

We recently discovered this aerial view of the nursery in 1938, in the center of this image. That’s the old street car that ran down Clement.

You can see the garden pathways, and what appears to be a very slim plant selection.

We are much, much fuller now, 89 years later, brimming with beautiful selections for your gardens and home.

The most abundant interloper at the curb in front of the nursery is Chamomile. We pull the grasses that sprout around them, but leave the curb herb for pollinators and color.

German or Roman chamomile is not considered invasive, but it’s a self-seeding, fast-spreading plant. Seeds from plants in our edible section easily distribute throughout the yard, and beyond.

Our edible selection is overflowing with herbs, veggies and greens for your summer garden.

Sound up!

I built this nesting box in my garden 28 years ago, sized specifically to host chickadees.

Like clockwork, a nesting pair moves in mid April, and produces chicks that fledge in early May.

This current brood sounds like they’re itching to leave the nest and explore the world around them.

The high-pitched chirps are the parents off camera telling me to get away from the nest.

A “what on earth?” visitor on Earth Day, meet our huge hummingbird moth caterpillar!

These caterpillars are several inches long, with a characteristic horn on their rear, resembling smaller versions of tomato hornworms.

After metamorphosis, the moth does resemble a hummingbird in appearance and size, with the same ability to hover as they collect nectar and pollinate flowers.

They generally feed on honeysuckle and herbs, and aren’t considered a pest in your garden.

Happy Earth Day to each and every occupant of this incredible planet.

They just bee making the rounds on Eschscholzia Californica ‘maritima’ in our native plant section on a gorgeous afternoon.

Maritima is a low-mounding, perennial variant of our state flower, with distinct blue-gray foliage and yellow-orange flowers.

Native to the northern and central California coast, it is perfectly at home in our sandy, sunny and windy environment.

She has risen.

I went to water my Sansevieria Shark Fin and noticed she’d lifted her entire root ball 4” out of the pot in less than a month.

The culprit is a new branch that’s trying to find its way to the surface.

A new pot is definitely in order.

On this Easter Sunday, whatever path you follow, marvel at the impossible beauty and glory surrounding you along your way.

Tidy Tips in the breeze on a perfect San Francisco day.

Layia Platyglossa is a native annual found in California’s low-elevation dry habitats in the Coastal Ranges, Central Valley, Channel Islands, and southern coastal plain.

Pollinated flowers produce a singular seed that dries with thick, tough wings, which are dispersed by wind.

Once you plant them, they’ll self-sow and return year after year.
