SF CRISIS housing proposal by my firm has been shortlisted in the San Francisco Housing Challenge.
A UN report by Leilani Farha cited San Francisco homeless camps and “city policies” as constituting human rights violations, The report states:
“Attempting to discourage residents from remaining in informal settlements or encampments by denying access to water, sanitation, and health services and other basic necessities, as has been witnessed by the Special Rapporteur in San Francisco and Oakland constitutes cruel and inhuman treatment and is a violation of multiple human rights, including the rights to life, housing, health and water and sanitation.
[...] The right to a secure home is a universal right under international human rights law. Lack of security of tenure can never justify forced evictions of those residing in informal settlements.”
My model for (post-earthquake, fire, zoning law or market failure) crisis housing, provides Single Room Ownership dwellings on demand. Each modular dwelling includes an ADA shower, storage, power, heat, sanitation and sleeping platform and can be relocated, as an ADU or to plug in and live locations. Five city owned parking lots are identified for multistory structures to plug in 1300 of these SRO dwellings to prioritize people over parking. The goal is to get that number up to 5,800 to meet the current demand. The Design was short listed in the International San Francisco Affordable Housing Challenge alongside entries from 15 countries.
When marked forces utterly fail to supply the basic dignified tools of society look outside the dominant system.
