Fresh basil, parmesan, garlic, pine nuts, Calabrian peppers, lemon, and olive oil blend together into a rich, vibrant pesto with a cozy homemade flavor.

🌿 Tanya’s Cozy Basil Pesto recipe:

Ingredients
🌱 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves
🌲 1/3 cup pine nuts
🧀 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
🧄 2–3 garlic cloves (california garlic is my fave)
🌶️ 2 hot peppers (I use calabrian peppers)
🍋 Juice of 1/2 lemon (I use Eurekas)
🫒 1/2 cup olive oil (I use Sciabica’s EVOO)
🧂1/2 teaspoon salt
🖤 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
• Toast the pine nuts in a dry skillet for 5 minutes, until light brown.
• Add the basil, pine nuts, Parmesan, garlic, peppers, lemon juice, salt, and pepper to a food processor.
• Pulse a few times until roughly combined.
• Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while blending until the pesto becomes smooth and creamy.
• Taste and adjust salt, lemon, or pepper as desired.
• Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Tip
Lightly toasting the pine nuts before blending adds a deeper, nuttier flavor to the pesto. For a softer, sweeter pesto with no heat, use roasted red peppers instead of Calabrian peppers. A thin layer of olive oil on top will help keep the pesto fresh and vibrant in the refrigerator

Plant pumpkin seedlings this month to grow Halloween pumpkins! 🎃🎃

Here are 5 tips for planting pumpkins:

☀️ Choose a sunny spot. Pumpkins do best with full sun and warm conditions.

📏 Give them plenty of space. Vines spread fast, so leave 8-12 feet around the seedlings for each plant to grow.

🤎 Improve the soil first. Mix in compost or other organic matter so the soil is rich and well drained.

💧Water deeply and consistently. Keep the soil moist, especially when flowers and fruits are forming, but avoid soggy soil.

A simple way to plant them is to make a small mound, sow a few seeds about 1 inch deep, then thin to the strongest seedlings after they sprout. 🌱

Why we love California natives plants and why you should consider adding them in your landscape:

☀️ Low Maintenance - Gardening with CA natives means less watering, pruning, feeding and fewer pest.

🦋 Support Local Ecology - CA natives provide food and shelter for native birds, butterflies and beneficials

💧Save Water - Native plants evolved in and are highly adapted to the California climate, especially our dry summer weather pattern.

🐛 Reduce Pesticides - CA natives are more resistant to pest and diseases. Eliminating the need to “spray” keeps chemicals out of our creeks and watersheds.
