When you can control your irrigation from your phone, you can create moments like this. šŸ˜‡šŸ’¦

Sometimes the simplest things make the best summer memories. And on days like today, I’m especially glad we built a garden. ā˜€ļøšŸŒ±

I made my very first lei! 🌸

When leis arrived in the mail for my daughter’s graduation, I realized she couldn’t walk the stage without one from Mama. So I gathered some clippings from the garden and strung them together with a needle and dental floss. She loved it!

Necessity is the mother of invention… and apparently, dental floss is the mother of lei-making. šŸ˜‚šŸŒø

First blueberries of the year! 🫐

Last year, this blueberry bush was in a container and didn’t produce any fruit. I moved it into the ground at the beginning of the year, and it’s noticeably happier!

Turns out it was just waiting for a permanent address. šŸ˜‚šŸŒ±

Preliminary notes for a patio project in the SF Panhandle with a living wall and strategically placed planters. All projects actually start with ā€œBeautiful Mindā€ sketches. šŸ¤“šŸ˜‚

It’s good practice to trim off side shoots from dragonfruit to encourage upward growth. I recently trimmed my four dragonfruit cuttings (aka ā€œJesus cactusā€) and am now rooting the cuttings to make more plants.

Here’s my process:
Days 3–7: Let the cuttings callous.
Days 7–10: After transferring into succulent mix, avoid watering to encourage rooting. Water a bit sooner in warm temps and later in cooler conditions.

Anyone need some cuttings? 😬

When I have an abundance of Italian parsley in the garden, I often make Gabrielle Hamilton’s chickpea salad. She used to own and operate Prune, one of our favorite restaurants in NYC. Although it closed during the pandemic, we think of its simple preparations and clean flavors whenever we make a dish like this.

I was delighted to find Mexican oregano seedlings at Encinal Nursery! They’ve been growing beautifully in the garden, and I recently harvested some to make guisado (stewed beef taco filling). I intentionally cut more than I needed so I could strip the lower leaves for cooking and hang the rest to dry. Some stalks were as long as 14ā€! 😳

Side note: Mexican oregano isn’t actually oregano. It belongs to a different plant family and smells completely different—think anise and citrus notes.

Watercress — the plant you can overwater. šŸ’§šŸŒæ

I’ve quietly been growing watercress in a grow bag outside my office. It gets a few hours of morning sun and bright, indirect light for the rest of the day. I don’t have irrigation set up in that space, so I water it almost daily with the warm-up water from my shower.

While most plants ā€œcan’t breatheā€ in soggy conditions, watercress thrives in them.

Here’s how my seven plants are doing two months after transplanting — and a photo from day one. You can barely see them! šŸ˜‚

As I was taking down my tomato plants at the end of the growing season, it pained me to simply toss these beautiful cuttings into the compost. So I saved a few and tucked them into some soil, just to ā€œsee what happens.ā€

Well—here’s what happened! šŸ…šŸŒ± One cutting has taken off and turned into a thriving new plant. It even had a major growth spurt during our recent heat waves. Several of the others didn’t make it, but this one held on through some pretty dire conditions: left out in the rain, kept outside through the cold, and still going strong.

At some point, the label fell off, so it’ll be a fun surprise to discover whether it’s an Early Girl or a Barry’s Crazy Cherry tomato.

Sometimes the garden rewards a little curiosity with something magical. ✨
