This is one of the first Modernist buildings from 1913, by Walter Gropius. He eventually taught at Harvard where he taught one of my professors at Berkeley, Don Olson.

Built in 1913, the Fagus Factory was designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and architect Adolf Meyer. The brick and glass project is located in Germany and is considered an influential work of early modernism. (Photographer unknown)

I love the mid-Century period in Architecture. This building seems to be heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax building.

The Oklahoma State Capitol Bank, designed by Robert Roloff of Bailey, Bozalis, Dickinson & Roloff in 1962, captures the essence of mid-century modern architecture. This architectural gem features sleek lines and bold geometric forms, creating a dynamic and inviting space. The extensive use of glass allows natural light to flood the interiors, fostering a sense of openness and transparency. The concrete and steel structure exemplifies the innovative spirit of the 1960s, blending functionality with artistic expression. As a prominent landmark, the bank symbolizes the forward-thinking design and cultural optimism of its era.

This house that I designed 24 years ago is on the market for the first time since it was built. It is more traditional than most of the houses I design, but it was a lot of fun to work on and I’m very proud of it.

We just finished this extensive remodel of a house in the Marina District of San Francisco for our wonderful client, Shelley. We moved several walls, reconfigured and completely remodeled the light court, the kitchen, the bathrooms, the lower floor and created a new stair in a new location and added the Nana doors to the exterior.

Fascinating 60’s modernism.

In the early 1960s, the Johnson Wax company built its first European branch office in Mijdrecht, Netherlands. They asked Dutch architect Huig Maaskant for an "unsual design" and he created this boomerang-shaped structure suspended above a pond on angular concrete columns. (Photographer unknown, circa 1965)
