: "How can I make my property more fire-resilient without removing my trees?"

This is one of the most important questions for homeowners! Creating defensible space doesn't mean clearing everything out — healthy, well-maintained trees like redwoods and oaks can actually slow the spread of fire. The goal is smart management: thinning ladder fuels, removing deadwood, and pruning branches at least 10 feet from structures. An can help you protect your property without sacrificing your trees.

We've been seeing a lot of this lately, and if you have pine, oak, or elm trees on your property, you'll want to know about it, too!

are showing up across our region, and they can be devastating to some of our most beloved landscape trees. Here's what to look for:

✔️Small, round entry holes in the bark with sawdust-like frass around them
✔️Yellowing, browning, or wilting foliage — often starting at the top
✔️Pitch tubes or resin flowing from the trunk
✔️Sections of bark that peel away to reveal winding galleries beneath

The good news? Early detection is everything. Acting now, before populations explode through the summer, gives your trees the best chance at recovery. Our ISA-certified arborists at Anderson's can assess your trees, identify the species involved, and put a targeted treatment plan in place before the damage gets ahead of you.

: Do I need a permit to remove a tree in ?

It depends, and it's definitely worth knowing before you do anything! Trees on the street will always need a permit, no matter the size. We'll work directly with the City of San José Department of Transportation to sort that out for you.

If your tree is on private property and is larger than 38 inches in circumference at 4.15 feet above ground, you'll need a permit through the City's Planning Department.

Still not sure? Just ask us! Our arborists have been navigating San Jose's tree permit process for decades and are happy to point you in the right direction. Have a tree question of your own? Ask us here: https://birdeye.cx/lbnhdm

Your trees may already be sending you SOS signals. Are you catching them? 👀

's heat and dry seasons can take a serious toll, so here are 5 signs your trees need a health plan:

✅ Dead or hanging branches overhead
✅ Sudden or unexplained leaning
✅ Discolored or wilting foliage
✅ Pest infestation or fungal growth

Don't ignore these signs! We've seen what happens when small tree problems turn into big ones. The good news? A proactive tree health plan can make all the difference! Our ISA-certified arborists know trees inside and out and can spot issues before they become safety hazards or costly removals.

Summer heat is approaching in : are your trees ready? Here's how to protect them before temperatures rise in the coming weeks:

✅ Deep water early morning or evening to reach the roots
✅ Apply 2–4 inches of mulch to lock in moisture (keep it away from the trunk!)
✅ Prune dead or damaged branches to boost airflow & growth
✅ Watch for pests like aphids, spider mites & scale insects
✅ Wrap young tree trunks to prevent sunscald
✅ Test your soil & fertilize for a strong foundation

Don't wait until the heat hits; schedule a tree inspection now to ensure your trees are prepared for summer and beyond. 📞 Call us today at (408) 874-8866 to schedule your inspection.

If you live in and have , this one's for you!

is one of the most devastating tree diseases in the Bay Area, and by the time most homeowners notice it, the damage is already severe. Here are 3 signs your oak may be affected:

⚠️ Dark, oozing patches on the trunk are one of the earliest and most telling warning signs
⚠️ Branches dying back from the top down, often progressing quickly once the disease takes hold
⚠️ Leaves turning brown while still attached. Unlike normal leaf drop, affected leaves brown suddenly and cling to the tree

spreads fast, and early intervention is everything. The sooner it's caught, the more options you have.
If you're seeing any of these signs, don't wait. Our ISA-Certified Arborists at Anderson's know oaks inside and out and can assess your tree before it's too late. Call us today at (408) 874-8866!
