I received a call a few months ago from a musician needing a workshop to work on and fine tune his guitars. He had been researching prefab companies offering similar priced and sized studios, coming close to ordering one from Montana.
He cold called me w/o seeing our work asking if we, as a local company, could make one for a similar price and quality which was under $40k all said and done, design, fabricate, install.
I led him to look at our website and see if our aesthetic suited him and, happily, it did.
Now he wishes his house could match the studio because he loves it so much!
His friends are blown away and he enjoys showing it. This is exactly what I was hoping for when setting out on this path, improving people’s lives through architecture. Lifting their spirits just by occupying a space through natural light and materials, specifically wood.

We make a 9’x13.5’ also, and both do not require a building permit, though sometimes a planning permit is necessary.
We make ADU’s and complete single family residences too.

Latest install, the Rööm Mini 9 x 9 as a guitar workshop. We wrote off white boards and accompanying plastic markers in favor of chalk on blackboard paint we applied over plywood.
Not only is it just fun to use chalk, it’s in tune with our ethos of leaving no trace when possible.
This modus operandi was established when I started the company. When you work with us you’re making a statement of putting the well being of the planet a priority, all while having fun doing cool things.

Here’s a sweet project for a guitarist who requested our 9’ x 9’ Rööm as a workshop to maintain his instruments.
On an existing patio, I was able to remove one paver an install a single groundscrew that will hold down the center of the structure while the corner posts rest on conc piers, connected with bolts.

New ground screw install in slo county for a small backyard shed.
We love these little installs and the clients love this alternative pier foundation to concrete for a variety of reasons one of which is the absence of mess and site disturbance. As soon as their in the ground framing can start immediately.

Special thanks to Robbin of for loaning us the screw attachment necessary to drive the screws into the ground. Ours has been taken by a GC on another project so we’re compromised until we can procure one from Sweden.

The water trough is installed.
Several iterations were considered then the final resolution resulted in a sturdy deck that supports walking directly on it.
(4) 16Ga steel panels that nest into each other and pitch in two directions sending rainwater to the front and the back of the house.
I painted the interior w minium oxide (shout out to )to prevent rusting inside while leaving the underside free to weather and rust.
So glad to see it transform from an idea to drawings and then the actual piece.

The Mojave landscape is enchanting, magical and ridiculously beautiful.
Our Cobalt Cabin is getting dressed up in a steel skin that will endure years without requiring maintenance, while fitting in with the weathered nature of all materials and plant life.

Our home away from home at Hoot Owl Ranch in Yucca Valley.
Such a sweet place to stay with stunning views of Yucca Valley below and Mt San Jacinto beyond.
Couldn’t ask for a better way to re over and refresh for the work on .

Douglas Fir (D.F.) Purlins and 24 Ga Corrugated Galvalume roofing.

In an ideal situation all parts are prefab’d in the shop before leaving for the site. We were able to mill to final dimension, but that was it. In this case I cut crude half laps on the 3.25”x3.25” D.F. in the field. These are green so as the desert sucked out their internal moisture they tended to move a bit, but not too much.
All in all they went up according to plan (thanks ) and we were able to install metal roofing over the smaller of the two roofs. There will be a 4’ wide continuous shallow trough between the two shed roofs to catch runoff.
I’m super excited to see this stage of the process.

What a great time we’re having here above the high desert!
We installed the self adhered WRB (water resistant membrane in blue) over the primary structure.
We then applied our 2x truss plates to accept the “continuous” 1 1/2” rigid mineral wool board. The interruption occurs over our beams so we have plenty of depth to offset the break in insulation.
We installed the primary WRB (black layer) over that assembly of materials.
Prior to setting the trusses we applied butyl tape to protect the membrane from the steel attachment plates.
It all came together as designed and planned, which was hugely satisfying.

We’re ready to get the purlins processed to place on the trusses so we can install the corrugated galvanized roofing this week.

It’s amazing to acclimatize the body to be on a roof in the desert, in July, w/ temps verging on 100 degrees and be ok.

First time using a self-adhered wrb (weather resistant membrane) as I have exclusively protected Rööm with a mechanically fastened wrb, using staples and sealing all wood seams w special sealing tapes beforehand. The self adhered membrane negates the need to tape so we save on labor and complexity.
These high quality membranes help protect the structure by allowing the building to “breathe” out while blocking moisture from entering from the exterior. The idea is to create an air tight building.

The membranes I’ve used so far are made by and .international , both leaders in providing products engineered to address the latest in building science.

Our structures are designed to bridge the gap between old and new technologies, all to ensure the building will perform at a high level, last a long time, bring joy through the beauty of wood to the occupants and benefit the planet by incorporating healthy, non toxic, sustainably sourced products.
It’s challenging to meet the above 100%, but we strive to get as close as we can.

Next up: roofing and continuous exterior rigid insulation.
