Construction has begun! This project in San Luis Obispo is at the base of the iconic Cerro San Luis mountain. The original dilapidated garage is being rebuilt to include a 441 sf ADU. We were able to maintain the original garage footprint within the creek side setback to take advantage of views into the ephemeral creek below. New square footage was added to the areas not within the creek setbacks.

This Lompoc Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) was a garage converted into a one bedroom, one bath with laundry. The clients were interested in keeping the existing skylights so a light well was created around the skylights and the garage trusses were painted and left exposed. The skylights provide a naturally lit space.

This is an all electric ADU. It’s heated with a mini-split heating system and the water heater is a heat-pump unit.

My San Luis Obispo clients both wanted a creative place to call their own. He wanted a workspace for wood working and tinkering. She wanted a sewing room. No one wanted to sacrifice the backyard and garden space.

The art studio was pushed right up to the rear and side setbacks which influenced its form. Both spaces have tall ceilings to help create open, light, creative environments.

Contact me if you have a project, big or small, simple or complex. I’d love to help you design whatever you have in mind.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the completion of homes I’ve designed. I also receive just as much joy helping clients with their own designs and visions. Seeing progress pictures of this project is rewarding and inspiring in so many ways.

This house was designed and is being built by the owners after their home of 21 years was destroyed by the 2017 Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa, Ca. Lynn had ideas based on her old home with added space and a new design theme. “My theme on the house is sort of rustic industrial. I like farmhouse style also, and steampunk. I’m trying for sort of a vintage warehouse vibe… I really like some of the old hippie handmade houses of recycled materials…”

Contact me if want help realizing a vision you have for your new home, remodel or addition. My services include design and construction documents to obtain a building permit.

I will always have a special place in my heart that the first home I designed was with such wonderful clients and in such a remarkable location. Steve and Sona’s beautiful home is in Carmel Highlands, Ca.

Client Testimonial:
“In 1996 we decided to build our dream home on the magical Big Sur Coast. This area is natural and majestic so we needed a home that would reflect just how special it is. After quite a bit of research a post and beam home was our choice. After even more research our choice to design and frame the home was Pacific Post and Beam.

We selected Dan a young architect associated with PP&B to design our home. He listened and designed a home that fits perfectly with our needs and the environment. Building was easier than we imagined. Not something you will hear from most people who build a home. The intricacies of a post and beam home were a little daunting to the rest of the sub contractors but, because of PP&B’s professionalism and knowledge, they soon realized this would be not only fun but a home building project they would feel proud to be a part of.

Fifteen years later my husband says every time we drive up the driveway “Wow, who lives in this beautiful house?” Pacific Post and Beam was the perfect choice to build this unique style of home.”

After graduating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1993 with a Bachelor of Architecture I went to work at Pacific Post and Beam, a premier timber-framing company in California. PP&B designed, fabricated and erected hand-crafted, timber-frame homes statewide and beyond.

I had limited construction experience but had an aptitude for working with my hands, a skill I developed working around the house with my father and further refined in Cal Poly’s applied art classes like glassblowing, metalsmithing, jewelry casting, ceramics and life drawing.

With my degree in Architecture and emphasis on applied arts, I was hired onto the construction crew at PP&B to gain the timber-framing knowledge I would need to design timber-frame homes. This opportunity lead to over 27 years designing and building timber frames.

I began offering design services prior to 2020 when Covid pushed the owners of PP&B to limit their services to timber frame trusses. I’m now doing business as Daniel J Kallal designing new homes, remodels, additions and accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on California’s Central Coast.

Contact me for design and construction document services if you have a project you'd like to get started.
