Hello Loyal Patriot customers!
As autumn is finally here for Texas (I’m learning as a new Texan how different the seasons are here) we wanted to reach out and update you on what autumn means to us at Patriot. Whether you’re born and raised in Texas, or a transplant like myself, fall weather brings many substantial changes with it. Growing up in New England, some years would snow by Halloween and some years would be bitterly cold and not a flake of snow would fall until Christmas. But the feeling of the season is always the same - the smell of the cool air, the leaves changing colors, a slight frost on the grass in the early morning that evaporates into a fiery smoke under the still warm rays of the sun. And for us, this season reminds us of one major theme - preparation.
Hundreds of years ago, autumn and winter preparation looked a lot different than it does today. We no longer question if the long months of cold temperatures will be our demise (although some years it still feels like it), or if we have enough food stored knowing that the berries and plants sustaining us will be frozen, buried under snow for months to come. Autumn brings us those few months before the winter to cherish the growth we experienced in the summer by preparing our annuals for next summer, and to plant new growth to take hold over the winter and give you the beautiful look everyone strives for in the spring/summer months.
This past summer brought record breaking temperatures in Texas and a severe drought to most of the state. It was hard on our landscapes - plants weren’t getting the water they needed, and we didn’t have the backup water resources needed in order to supplement that problem. Thankfully we are getting some rain now, and the temperatures are starting to slowly drop, which is an indicator that the seasonal shift is happening sooner than later.
Preparing for cold weather is important and quite crucial to the success of your vegetation. Services like pruning and deadheading will remove any of the spent growth from the plant and will allow the plant to store its energy more efficiently, and will not waste resources trying to send nutrients to a part of the plant that doesn’t need them. Removing weeds before they seed and die will help contain their spread. There are plenty of things to do that will help prepare you and your landscape, and we would love to be of help.
As many of you know, our schedule is quite busy so we wanted to reach out to those of you looking to use our fall services – contact us to get on the schedule sooner than later! Some of the specialty services we offer during this season include:
