💧 More than 50% of Americans rely on groundwater for drinking water, and nearly all rural Texans depend on it.

Groundwater is stored in underground formations called aquifers and replenished by rainwater that soaks into the soil. Forests, prairies, wetlands and even well-maintained lawns help recharge these critical water supplies.

When we replace natural ground with concrete and asphalt, less water can soak in, and more is lost to runoff and evaporation.

March 8-14 is National Groundwater Awareness Week. What happens on the surface affects the water beneath our feet.

Extreme hydrologic drought is showing up across parts of Texas. As of February 11, several sub watersheds (a smaller area of land that drains water within a larger watershed) in the Pecos, Nueces, Middle Colorado, Sulphur, Cypress, and Neches river basins are hitting record-low conditions for this time of year (shown in red on the map). What's the difference between freezing rain and sleet? They're both ice in the end, but how they form is different.

Sleet is more like ice pellets, or sprinkles on a donut. While they can create slick travel, they don't really cause power issues.

Freezing rain on the other hand is the worst. It's a glaze. It clings to everything, causing weight on power lines and trees. Your temp MUST be below 32 degrees for freezing rain. You can't have it at 33, 34, etc.
