lawmakers are advocates for Insurance policies that incentivize and acknowledge homeowners’ investments in home hardening and property improvements.
Representatives Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) introduced the Disaster Resiliency and Coverage Act of 2024 (H.R. 7849), legislation providing homeowners in disaster-prone regions with broad incentives to harden their properties against wildfires and other risks. The legislation is intended to help address the ongoing insurance crisis in California and other states, as the rising frequency and intensity of natural disasters has led insurers to raise rates and, in several cases, exit certain markets entirely
AB 2416 will provide homeowners and communities with cost-effective wildfire prevention efforts and incentivize both property-wide and community-wide wildfire mitigation efforts. This bill also incentivizes insurers to provide coverage for homes and businesses in California by requiring the California Department of Insurance to periodically review and update the Safer from Wildfire regulations.
