Check the moisture of the soil (6 - 8 inches down) around the tree's dripline (area under the outermost leaves of the tree - see diagram). If the soil is dry and crumbly, apply water slowly so it seeps deeply into the soil (The dotted line below show the tree's dripline).

First to go was the lawn. Now we are not watering the trees. As I passed several yards in the neighborhood, I noticed that a lot of folks are doing a great job complying with “California’s Drought and Mandatory Water Conservation” regulations that have been set by the state and additional regulations set by the county and city…. yards are going brown. I also noticed these conservative measures are taking a toll on our trees as well. After speaking with a city water department official, they admitted that they do not want all the trees to die. After all, trees provide an immense range of health, energy, environmental and economic benefits and we need to ensure their health.
Winter is approaching and the trees will go dormant. Fall is a good time to give a large tree water as they prepare to go dormant for the winter. Give the tree water in moderation. A deep and slow soak, is perhaps the best way to hydrate the root system using a drip or a soaker hose. You will want to water under the canopy a few feet past the edge of the branches. Be sure not to concentrate the water at the base of the tree since this can cause rot.
Hiring a professional is the best approach to ensure a healthy and beautiful tree over a period of years for your home, ranch, and office. Call Les' Tree Care at 805.896.2012 for more information on pruning, trimming, tree removal and questions you may have regarding preparing your trees for the winter.

The Gnarly Oak Tree

One day a woodcutter took his grandson into the forest for his first experience in selecting and cutting oak trees. These they would later sell to the boat builders. As they walked along, the woodcutter explained that the purpose of each tree is contained in its natural shape: some are straight for planks, some have the proper curves for the ribs of a boat, and some are tall for masts. The woodcutter told his grandson that by paying attention to the details of each tree, and with experience in recognizing these characteristics, someday he too might become the woodcutter of the forest.

A little way into the forest, the grandson saw an old oak tree that had never been cut. The boy asked his grandfather if he could cut it down because it was useless for boat building – there were no straight limbs, the trunk was, short and gnarled, and the curves were going the wrong way. “We could cut it down for firewood,” the grandson said. “At least then it will be of some use to us.” The woodcutter replied that for now they should be about their work cutting the proper trees for the boat builders; maybe later they could return to the old oak tree.

After a few hours of cutting the huge trees, the grandson grew tired and asked if they could stop for a rest in some cool shade.
The woodcutter took his grandson over to the old oak tree, where they rested against its trunk in the cool shade beneath its twisted limbs. After they had rested a while, the woodcutter explained to his grandson the necessity of attentive awareness in order to recognize the value of everything in the forest and in the world. Some things are readily apparent, like the tall, straight trees; other things are less apparent, requiring closer attention, like recognition of the proper curves in the limbs. And some things might initially appear to have no purpose at all, like the gnarled old oak tree.

The woodcutter stated, “You must learn to pay careful attention every day so you can recognize and discover the purpose the creator has for everything. For it is this old oak tree, which you so quickly deemed useless except for firewood, that now allows us to rest against its trunk amidst the coolness of its shade.

“Remember, grandson, not everything is as it first appears. Be patient, pay attention, recognize, and discover.”

Latest predicated forecast suggests “Godzilla El Nino” may be coming to California.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center said Thursday that all computer models are predicting a strong El Nino to peak in the late fall or early winter. A host of observations have lead scientists to conclude that “collectively, these atmospheric and oceanic features reflect a significant and strengthening El Nino.”

They are telling us that the strengthening El Nino in the Pacific Ocean has the potential to become one of the most powerful on record, as warming ocean waters surge toward the Americans, setting up a pattern that could bring once-in-a-generation storms this winter to drought-parched California.

Storms may cause limbs or entire trees to fall potentially damaging homes, cars and other structures. A vast majority of the public doesn’t know how to assess a tree's health or what to look for. You will need to determine whether or not the tree is dead or dying and if it is a hazard. Is the tree crowding? Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Les’ Tree Care provides comprehensive tree service for residential, ranch, commercial and municipal properties. To make sure your trees are in their best shape possible for the upcoming winter season call Les’ Tree Care at 805.986.2012 today!

Tree Chipping

Chipping is a common way to remove tree limbs and branches after they have been cut down. Once a tree branch has been cut down, it is then put into a wood-chipping machine, that grinds the wood into chips.
Chipping is an essential part of having trees trimmed, cut down or removed. It also condenses the waste and saves in costs when hauled away. The wood chips are a big factor in building rich, healthy soil. If you choose to keep and use your wood chips, they can be spread back over the land as a decorative finish to your landscaping or to fertilize the soil and conserve moisture. Definitely, an added feature during a drought. When you take a look at the benefits of tree chipping, it is a environmentally friendly approach to removing and recycling tree waste.

Tree Care and the Drought

The drought is causing a tremendous stress on our trees whether residential, ranch, commercial or on municipal properties. Many of us are turning our yards brown which can include no water for trees. As a result, many of our trees are under stress. When a tree is under stress, it may be attacked by insects. It is recommended that you watery our trees with a timed drip line. An alternative to a drip systems is to get 4 or 5 plastic gallon containers (milk cartons work great), and drill small holes in the bottom to allow the water to slowly seep into the ground. Place the containers around the parameter of the canopy of the tree. Refill as necessary.

As of today, California has had a 70% increase in wild fires this year and there are no signs of relief. It is estimated that the state has lost over 12 million trees to date with those numbers increasing daily. It is more important than ever to maintain the health of our trees.

Proper care for your trees is an investment, but one that can lead to substantial returns. Well-cared for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. At Les' Tree Care, we specialize in all aspects of tree care and pride ourselves in excellent service and complete customer satisfaction. Tree Preservation
Today it is more important than ever to have a professional tree care person on your tree's side.

In cities across California, parched, brown lawns have become a symbol of the West’s worsening drought. To comply with the state’s historic water restrictions showers will be shorten, laundry loads will be limited and most yard sprinklers will be turned off.
During this drought many trees will be stressed so it's time to watch for beetles. Beetles are only successful in attacking trees that are stressed and right now, trees can be stressed because of the drought.

We don’t want to create alarm, but this is a tree health issue that can become a bigger issue. Hiring a professional tree care person is the best approach to recognizing early warning signs of infestation and in maintaining healthy trees for your home, ranch, and office property.

Cabling and Bracing
Summer is here and you are getting ready to enjoy a lazy afternoon, sipping on a cool glass of ice tea under the shade of your favorite, “Old Oak Tree”. Just as you are settling into your lounger to relax, you look up and notice a branch that just doesn’t look safe. It is heavy and at risk of breaking off at any moment. You don’t want to just cut the limb off because you could damage or lose the tree and all that wonderful shade.
Don't worry there are things that can be done to support and stabilize the tree. Trees can often benefit from the additional support of cabling and bracing to help keep them safe and healthy. Cabling techniques may be an effective in extending the useful life of a structurally flawed tree. Under certain circumstances, threaded metal rods are strategically placed in parts of the main trunk to help hold the structure together. The proper placement of steel cable and/or steel threaded rods in a tree is best left to a professional because improperly installed braces of any kind may do more harm than good.
Les Ames is trained to identify the visible signs of structural weakness and can determine if a cable or bracing system is appropriate. Call Les Ames at Les’ Tree Care 805.896.2012 for more information today.
