We are proud to have one of our projects included as a case study in the new book “Designing for Zero Carbon”. Our Page Center at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab near Mammoth Lakes is an all-electric building with heating and cooling by a ground-source heat pump and 18 kw of solar energy production. For those who know such things, it has a Measured Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 28.8 kBtu/sf-year, quite low.

We finally got to photograph one of our latest houses, after a couple years of construction and a year of Covid! The house is a completely new design, created after the owners lost their home in the 2017-2018 Thomas Fire. The owners loved the site, at the end of a street and with undeveloped hills in their back yard, and wanted to rebuild with a more functional design, taking more advantage of spectacular views. An ocean view is captured from a south-facing deck with movable shade covering and from a large roof deck complete with outdoor fireplace, barbecue, sink, and dumbwaiter to the kitchen. The garage is located below the 1-story house, and a residential elevator from garage to house was included to allow them to stay in the house as they age.

We converted this 200 square foot, one-car garage in Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood to an Accessory Dwelling Unit in 2020. We did add French doors and windows, a closet and a fold-down bed.

Here is another image of the recently completed project of a residence and accessory dwelling in the Mesa neighborhood. Working with Dennis the owners crafted a 2-story house on the sloping lot, with an accessory dwelling unit below. The upper level of the house, at street level, has three bedrooms, kitchen and living room.
