Here are some pics of the messy beginning and middle stages of my painting “Big Sur Pine”! The key things I wanted to capture were the turquoise shade of water, the fog bank in the distance, and of course, the grandeur of the scene.

Swipe through to see the original reference photo, too. I can’t even remember what year I took this photo off of the Vicente Flat trail, right in the heart of Big Sur.

I’ve held on to this image, waiting for the right time to paint it. It was perfect for my last series of coastal landscapes, and the large scale was ideal for getting immersed in this beautiful scene.

When I travel and explore, I often think about the color palette of a place. Big Sur, to me, has shades of turquoise, purple, gold, and green, all of which are prominent in this piece!

Introducing my painting “Big Sur Pine”, an ode to one of my favorite places! A grand view of the mountains cascading towards the sea, viewed from high up on the trail, as if you are a bird yourself. A lone pine anchors the scene, standing strong in the face of the elements.

This painting reminds me of all my wonderful memories of adventures over the years. My trips to Big Sur are always a reset. Going in flustered and anxious from city life and hustle. But after a few nights under the stars, I return home dirty, sweaty, so happy, and reinvigorated for whatever project is up next!

My customers often tell me how feelings of calm and happiness instantly overcome them when they see my art. Isn’t that a way to begin each day?!

My original painting, “Pelican Drift” is an acrylic on canvas piece sized at 36”x48”. It makes a wonderful statement piece for a living area or office. There is only one original, each brushstroke applied with care and intention, and something I truly consider a piece of my heart.

It’s currently available and ready to find its forever home! I am happy to guide you to see if it is a good fit for your space, whether via a digital mock-up from a photo, or even bringing the physical piece to you for a trial run. DM me and we’ll make that happen!

“Pelican Drift” is a piece that captures the wonder of living in a bay teeming with life. Sometimes I get to the shore, and think to myself, “how did I end up living in a nature documentary?” Since I was born, I’ve travelled halfway around the world to be here now.

When I was working on this painting - it was one of the first of the Beneath Pacific Skies series - I was in a season of peace in my life. I set an intention to create art that fills me with joy, that comes from the heart, and celebrates the coast that I love.

I’ve been so lucky to have the privilege to live where I do, and to pursue art as a life path. Of course, that’s also happened because of intention, determination, and hard work. And, even though this is just a dreamy painting of some birds, the bigger message is that we all should have the opportunity to soar to inspiring places.

So I hope when you look at “Pelican Drift”, you’re reminded of your deepest dreams and desires, and maybe take a little leap towards what it is your heart wants most. 🦅🌝
