Here's some pics of SEED GROWN spiral aloes at the 4 leaf+ stage. I will be selling 36 count flats of these for $125.00 to all interested growers beginning in August. Seed grown plants develop faster than tissue cultured plants, and TC plants require 8 years before developing a fibonacci sequence of spiraling leaf.

I have started to grow more seed of the spiral aloe to place in deep cell pak flats for sale. The plants will be from 4-8 leaf stage, on the cusp of developing radial symmetry at about the 12 leaf stage. Whole flats only ,36 plants/flat will be priced at $125.00...pickup at the nursery only by appointment . Use email only [email protected]. This is a good way to start a collection or for resale. The seed germination I'm getting is disappointing, not good enough to sell . I will start seed as needed continuously until my stash is depleted. I have some 75K seed to work with. The viability drops with age .

I'm selling off all the adult plant breeding stock and any smaller plants, shutting down my nursery effort. The website will self-destruct on June 5 and I will retire to play guitar, travel and and grow vegetables in a remodeled greenhouse. It has been a fascinating journey to explore this species I don't regret, but I'm disappointed that nobody offered to buy my stock and continue the effort.

2025 is now year two in my effort to shut down my nursery and sell off the remaining tub specimens. I will have ~25 20" tubs for sale this Spring which I will announce in April.

I have posted on my website www.ecotree.net today an announcement of the sale of all nursery assets, breeding stock tub specimens (33) and tubs for sale (34), seed resource (3 qt jars ~75,000 seed), and various other accoutrements and chemicals. Interested parties may review the prospectus and make a bid. My investigation of the horticulture of this species has been a great journey for 40 years. I don't regret any of it, but it is time to pass on the collection to another highly educated, motivated and competent horticulturist. In my career as a landscape contractor and arborist dealing with hundreds of species of plants, Aloe polyphylla has been the greatest teacher of them all. I feel honored by the opportunity I took to go out to Lesotho, teach high school , and seek out the populations of this most beautiful of endangered species.

Propagation of the spiral aloe is difficult. After working as a grower of hundreds of species of cactus & succulents I chose to focus on Aloe polyphylla to solve this challenge. And a challenge it has been, for fourty years. Other nurserymen tried tissue culture and while the science is dependable, the results for this species are disappointing. Seed grown plants develop faster than tissue culture clones, and begin a spiral leaf phyllotaxy at about the 8 leaf stage, leading to 5 visible leaf spirals at about the 45 leaf stage. Tissue culture plants show a confused leaf arrangement for the first 7 years of its life, and in the 8th year finally figure out what seed grown plants know from day 1.
