EcoScapes team uses swales and berms, dry streambeds, pumice wicks, mulch and infiltration basins to passively capture and hold water on site. Slowing the speed of the water allows rainwater to seep into the roots of trees, shrubs, and other vegetation, as well as replenish the aquifer.

At EcoScapes we recognize that the foundation of all our gardens is the health and activation of the soil, using appropriate amendments, necessary drainage, and proper mulches.

Alameda Rain Garden Project @ Sicomoro (Alto Park) Ribbon cutting

Saturday, April 8, 2017, 11:00 a.m.

On West Alameda, across from Sicomoro Street

Parking will be available at Alto Park near Bicentennial Pool

A new rain garden on West Alameda, across from Sicomoro Street, will harvest large quantities of stormwater while preventing erosion and reducing pollution. With the Santa Fe Watershed Association’s leadership and the efforts of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, The RainCatcher, and Southwest Urban Hydrology, the City of Santa Fe will host the ribbon cutting April 8, at 11:00 a.m.

The rock-plated, compost-infused infiltration-basin is part of a series of similar structures that make up the Santa Fe River Demonstration Rain Gardens project, and this basin is one on the city’s Alameda Rain Gardens. The goal of this green-infrastructure series is to absorb 300,000 gallons of water per year. There will be an unveiling of an interpretive sign that explains the project. Experts will be on site to answer questions and discuss both how rain gardens are built and why they are so important to our river and watershed.

First and foremost, most homeowners want a landscape that they can use and enjoy while living in their home, but if they are contemplating selling their home in the next 3-5 years, it is always a good idea to consider whether you will get a return on your investment. According to experts in the field, upgrading your landscape is a solid financial investment into the value of your home. “Good landscaping can add up to 28% to overall home value”, says landscape economist John Harris http://www.houselogic.com/home-advice/landscaping-gardening/landscaping-home-value/

When contemplating whether an upgrade to your landscape will add value to their home, it’s important to consider which investments will pay off. The website homelogic lists Shade Trees, Native and low maintenance Plants, and Outdoor Lighting as “essential elements” to consider when investing in your landscape. In addition to the above listed “essentials”, the HomeLogic website lists fencing, terraced retaining walls and walkways as “nice extras”.

If you are interested in calculating the value that a particular tree will bring to your home (or for that matter, an already established tree), visit TreeBenefits.com and enter the particular type and size of tree and the site will calculate the specific monetary benefit that the tree will add to your home’s value.

When considering a substantial investment into your landscape and consequently into the value of your home, consider consulting with one of EcoScapes landscape designers for careful planning and inspired design.

The photos below were an Ecoscapes project from summer 2015 where the front entry path was extended down towards the parking area, creating a new terrace which allowed for the addition of a new south facing seating and planting area. The renovation of the entry area not only added functional value for the homeowner, but also gives the entry a more elegant appearance and potential future economic value.
