March Studio

March Studio We help visionary clients tell their stories and create spaces that are right for them, right for the people they serve, and right for the planet.

Since 1998, March Studio’s constant vision and passion, in both our teaching and our practice, is to combine the principles of good design with the best practices in marketing to create branded architecture with purpose. The result is something boldly innovative: beautiful, functional buildings and spaces that tell our clients’ stories, by capturing the essence of who they truly are. Brand is the

starting point. It both inspires us and guides us. It helps us to understand whom we are designing for and what’s important to them. The brand helps us to create meaning and purpose in the design. It informs what we are doing, how we are doing it, and why. We value our relationships and believe in a fully collaborative effort that leads to buildings and environments that help to fulfill our clients’ purpose. It is our intention that the spaces we create and the connections we foster will inspire creative collaborations and visionary ideas that add value to the architecture, the brand, and the community.

The classroom doesn’t really stop at the wall.

On most projects, the conversation naturally moves outside—working with landscape architects to think about shade, planting, sand, and how those spaces are actually used day to day.

What matters is how the two connect. How the inside picks up on what’s happening outdoors, and how easy it is for kids and teachers to move between them. Sometimes it’s as simple as opening things up so an activity can spill outside without needing to reset.

Outdoor spaces are often thought of as just play areas, but they can hold the same kind of learning—just in a different way. A lesson can happen at a table inside, or it can happen outside with more room, more movement, and a bit more unpredictability.

It’s not about replacing one with the other. Just making sure both are there—and that they work together.

The work that’s felt most meaningful to us at has been with nonprofit clients and community leaders—people who are already doing really important things.

A lot of the projects are simple. Finding space for a food kitchen. Creating storage. Turning an old school bus into a mobile classroom. But those constraints push creativity in a different way.

What matters is that the work supports something bigger. It aligns with my values. And it feels good to be part of that—to use architecture as a way to help others do what they do, just a little bit better.

Some projects stay with you—especially when you finally get to experience them in use.

Todd, Summer and Marisol designed this interior space for HLB just after Covid, at a time when returning to the office meant rethinking how a workplace could feel.

This visit marked the first time Todd was able to see the space in person, shaped not just by design, but by the people who use it every day.

The team welcomed him with lunch, conversation, and a chance to see how the space has settled into its own rhythm.
Grateful to see it lived in—and to know it’s supporting the kind of everyday moments it was designed for.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to work together.

Our principal, Todd, was invited by Susan Wood at Children’s Center at Caltech to present on the role of design and nature in early childhood education, building on the work shared at the ECSTEM Conference 2026.

More than 20 early childhood directors joined the session, bringing real challenges from their outdoor spaces into the conversation. The discussion quickly turned practical, with ideas, questions, and solutions taking shape together.

A good reminder that these spaces are always evolving, and the best outcomes usually come from sharing perspectives.

Spent Saturday at the 40th anniversary of The Growing Place in Santa Monica.

Ran into Ellen Khokha, founder and Director Emeritus, along with a lot of familiar faces, teachers, and longtime collaborators who’ve been part of this community for years.

One of those days where it’s less about the event itself and more about the people who show up. Good food, music, and the kind of conversations you don’t get on a schedule.

Always a nice reminder of how much history sits behind the work we see today.

Lunch and Learn with Vanessa Rentería from .

So many products, a lot to take in, and plenty of useful insight we’ll be bringing into future projects.

Thanks again Vanessa for walking us through it, and to California Pita for keeping everyone fueled.

Looking forward to working together soon.

For Marisol, design starts with making things clear.

She brings modeling and drafting skills that help clients actually see what’s coming — not just a rendering, but a real sense of the space before it exists. That ability to close the gap between concept and reality is what she does best.

Her experience spans commercial and educational projects, and she’s genuinely drawn to the community side of the work. The spaces where design has a real stake in how people show up and connect.

At March, she’s a collaborator first. Detail-oriented, versatile, and always thinking about the person on the other side of the presentation.

Shade isn’t just about comfort - it determines whether children use a space at all.

If a playground is too hot or exposed, kids won’t stay there. Adding shade makes outdoor areas more inviting and easier to use throughout the day.

There are many simple ways to start. Umbrellas and pop-up structures can quickly create shaded spots for play. Shade sails add coverage while creating interesting patterns. Built structures provide longer-term protection from both sun and rain.

Planting trees is another important step. Even small trees can offer shade, and over time they grow into larger areas where children can gather and play.

Step by step, these choices help turn outdoor spaces into places where children can stay longer, feel comfortable, and stay engaged.

Some places don’t just inspire—they recalibrate how you see.

Walking through Tlaltizapán de Zapata and Tepoztlán, inspiration revealed itself in layers. Not in grand gestures alone, but in the everyday—the way food is prepared and shared, the texture of hand-formed clay, the color and symbolism embedded in street-side objects, the quiet presence of centuries-old architecture supporting community life.

There’s a clarity in places like this. Craft isn’t separate from culture—it’s lived, visible, and carried forward through touch, repetition, and care.

What stood out wasn’t only the vibrancy, but the integration—how making, gathering, and belonging are seamlessly intertwined. A reminder that meaningful design doesn’t begin with invention, but with attention—with listening to what already exists and understanding why it endures.

Grateful for the opportunity to experience it with fresh eyes—and to carry that perspective forward.
