Solar panel cleaning - Boost solar panel productivity by 50%!?

Clean solar panels absolutely provided higher productivity. We recommend solar panel cleaning be done once every 1-3 years depending on location.
This photo showcases a before and after of a recent residential solar cleaning done in Santa Rosa, CA. The graph highlights just how important clean panels are to system productivity.
This rooftop system had not been cleaned in over 5 years. The solar cleaning was completed the morning of July 25th, 2025 and output immediately increased from 8-10 kWh to 16-18 kWH. This is a significant ongoing production loss that can be avoid with a routine cleaning. The best time of year to have your solar panel system cleaned?

If it has been a while since you had your solar panel system cleaned, a cleaning done right can be very beneficial to your system.
So when is the best time to have your solar panel cleaning done?
If its been a long while, sooner than later is ideal.
If you can though, timing the cleaning closer to the fall works out best.

Heres why.

Many homeowners reason a cleaning done in the spring makes the most sense going into the sunny summer months. While not a bad time to do it, there is a more ideal time of year to have them done. Late FALL!

I'll explain why doing your solar cleaning in later fall has several benefits.

1. Your solar panels accumulate the most debris during the spring and summer months.
2. In California particuarly, there is always a chance of ash accumulation during fire season which is usually summer and early fall.
3. As days get shorter going into fall and winter, your solar system will benefit most from the added sun exposure a thorough cleaning can give.

There are exceptions depending on your location, landscape, etc.

Do I Need Gutter Guards?

I get asked this question often during the rainy season, and over the years I have seen a lot of different types of gutter guards, and their performance over time, cleaning gutters throughout Sonoma County.

In most all cases I recommend not using gutter guards, as they can lead to other gutter problems, and there are other more simple and less costly solutions.

Most homes will benefit most from a thorough gutter cleaning and inspection periodically. Time between cleanings depends on the amount of trees close by.

In some cases they make sense, such as areas with many trees close by that drop all year, or certain inaccessible areas. If you do decide to get gutter guards, it is important the right type of guards are installed, and they are installed correctly.

Even with gutter guards installed some seasonal maintenance is recommended.

Why Have Your Rain Gutters Cleaned in a Brand New Home?

Ideally after moving into a brand new home everything should be well….brand new. Unfortunately more often than not I find in new development homes, during construction the rain gutter have been used like a trash can!

This carelessness can lead to considerable problems for a new homeowners down the road. Objects such as nails, fasteners, sawdust, calking tubes, rags, and more. All of which can cause blocked downspouts, and premature gutter corrosion.

I recommend having a thorough inspection and cleaning done after construction and landscape are fully complete. This will ensure the gutters are clean, clear and fully functional for years to come.

The above image is from a recent cleaning done for a clients new post fire rebuild. She had been in the home for a year and started noticing problems with the rain gutters. From the ground everything looked fine. After close inspections I was blown away by the amount of trash I found in there! I filled a 5 gallon bucket six times while cleaning the full gutter system. On one side the full length of the gutter had over a hundred rusty nails and 3 inches of packed sawdust inside. This combination of rust and acidity had caused some serious premature corrosion the full length of the gutter system. The gutter was less than two years old and looked like it needed replaced!
